You obviously haven't attended many dinners hosted by The British Council.

Salaries are poor for native speakers because of the inbalance between supply and demand.

^ this is the reason teacher's salaries are so low. If doing a professional job makes you a Nazi, then Heil Hitler.

Not too sure I follow your train of thought here L - care to explain further? If being a devoted teacher is the reason salaries are so low for ESL 'tutors' (let's get the terminology right here) then perhaps it's time everyone calls the whole show off.

I rather suspect the reason that salaries are poor is because the general quality of recruiting to language schools is very much below par.

Heck I'm glad I'm outta that whole teaching biz.

Sorry for the confusion. I was responding to this:

These people live to teach. TEFL Nazis are Cool!

I inferred that T_P makes little money because he doesn't take his job seriously and in fact looks down his nose at anyone who does, branding them "TEFL Nazis."

Perhaps that was not his intent. If not, I apologise. I'm just sick of hearing language school teachers saying that they don't have a 'real job' and all they do is 'baby-sit.'

Maybe they do. I don't.

Ok. Rant over. I should have just invoked Godwin's law.

i didn't know that was possible in the esl biz Smile

You didn't? Plenty of people make large amounts of money in ESL as well as in EFL.*

The backpackers and TEFLers and CELTites probably don't. But the professionals definitely do -- even in China.

* Note to non-English gibson: Teaching English at an EF franchise in Indonesia is not ESL.

Clearly, you are not familiar with this term.

FYI I teach in a school. I do not 'instruct' in a language mill.

Good luck with the babysitting Laughing

This thread has degenerated into a bit of slangin match but, well, it had EF in the title, so that's about par for the course.

Apologies if I got a bit prickly, T_P. Thankfully my language mill days are far behind me, too. I still think one should give one's best to one's students regardless of where one works though.

Mohon ma'af lahir dan batin.

Aaaarrrggghhh! I must have been bitten by a Ramadan zombie! Infected with goodwill! Must.... fight.... it.... Nooooooooooooooooooo
