It is my intention to prepackage some things that I might need in Vietnam and have them sent to me should I decide I actually need them. Can anyone share their experiences (especially cost) with shipping from US to Vietnam (Saigon)?

In that case, you need to get a hold of experienced and reliable international moving company/freight forwarder that can store and forward your prepackaged stuff as well as doing all the proper paper work to clear Vietnam customs. They can quote your price based on storage (1,2,3,...months) and forwarding cost.

The reason why I say experienced and reliable is that they must know what they are doing in order to ship anything in Vietnam. Some items like pornographic material or political literatures, etc. are banned and some high value items are subject to import tax. They can give you all that information prior to prepackaging your stuff.

Do a Google search for the moving company/freight forwarder.

Thanks for your help Chuck. I wasn't specific enough with my first post. I was wondering about the shipment of personal items. Things like clothes, shoes, books, etc. Nothing of any real value to anyone but me. I was under the assumption that friends or family could just mail me these things upon my request. Is that a valid plan?

In that case, in VN, you won't need a lot of clothes. It's too hot for suits and formal attires. And clothes in VN are very cheap and widely available.

I recommend that you ditch the clothes or have them stored with your family member. Buy new in Vietnam because it would just cost you too much money to send them to VN.

It depends on what types and amount of books you're bringing in. VNese government is highly sensity about bringing a large amount of books to their country. They are nervous that you might be bringing in some politically motivated or porno books which may be against their communist/socialist ideology. If it's a large volume of books, it's subject to customs inspection and will be held for period of time for inspection. Don't ask me how long though. As far as I know, they might just decide to keep them for their reading enjoyment. Wink

Recommend that just bring with you what you need. You'll find and get everything you need at very cheap price in VN.

Being that I stand 6' 4", and weigh in at 300lbs, I hesitate to expect that there would be any clothes available for me in Nam. I have heard that I can get custom made suits there fairly cheap, but everyday clothes are not easy to fing in the US for a man my size. Shoes are worse, since I wear size 15 wide. Under the circumstances, I am currently palnning to bring lots of clothes and shoes. By the way, does it ever get chilly enough in the South to warrant a sweater or jacket?

Not strictly true, Chuck. Have you been to Dalat before? It gets pretty chilly up there and I think it's classed as being in the south of Vietnam.
