Uh, I am thinking a medical forum is a better venue to discuss such things as STD's caused by IUD's.... The original question about prescriptions of BC pills in Mexico was answered early on. So was the question about doctors here. We have good ones. Come on down!

Sam can just stop reading if she doesn't want to.

But you're right Jetgirly, IUDs are most recommended for women who have already had children and don't want to do something so drastic and permenant as a tubal. Some one who might have another child in the future. But why would they prescribe pills then, those don't protect you against STDs either.

But you have to consider what 10 or more years of hormonal bc is doing to your body, there can be long term affects you aren't seeing now and the medical industry sees as "collateral damages" worth todays profit which will actually give them more profit in the future as you will need medical treatment! Especially if you're family has a history of cancers, estrogen based and estrogen like pills can be increasing your risk. The IUD I have actually has hormons in it, but the dose is small and local, and it's a progesteron like hormon that can protect you against cerival cancer--especially in cases of HPV (Which BTW 1/4 of the sexually active population has but most don't know it.) Progesteron has been shown to stunt cell changes in the cervix.

This is a question I had early on and after coming here would have been happier with better information. Be careful ladies saying that you can get whatever pills you want here. It might depend on what area you are in but in Monterrey I could not get the same kind I had and had nothing but problems. I can't find the same dosages that were in my pills here...the choices are a bit more limited. I was on triphasil which isn't just half and half dosage, there were specific doses for each pill. Can't find those here or anything similar.

Anyway it requires more research especially if you might be prone to any kind of problems. I'm only talking about the pills not the doctors.

That's why I always recommend teachers I work with see a doctor instead of just hitting the pharmacies. The doctors are more informed about exactly what is what then the people working in the pharmacies. Also doctors can order things that are not normally in stock at the pharmacies. (of course that means it will cost more)

I had the same experience as cangringo in Guadalajara; I couldn't find any pills that had gradiated (is that a word?) doses on different days, in fact the only pill I could find with the same horomones I was taking had something like 10 times the dosage as my original pills. I ended up switching to one called Microlut, which has micro doses of a different horomone (can't remember which right now) that you take all of the time, and has been working just dandy. It's 90 pesos. But yes, good point. Cheap pills are available here, just probably not the ones you're taking at home.

I know this is an old discussion and no one may respond but here goes...
For years now I have been living half of the year in Ecatepec and the first time I had to see a gyn doctor I chose a female doctor and had my husband/translator accompany me. It was comfortable, inexpensive and the presciption medication seems alot better than here in the States. I actually wait for my check ups and complaints for when I go back home in Mexico. The health care in Mexico seems more thorough and caring than here and the medications I have taken down there works better with less side effects. As for the birthcontrol I'm sure if you just take the prescrition with translation to a doctor he/she will give you one for Mexico the when you run out just take the empty box or container to the pharmacy and they will fill it no questions asked.
