Anyway, about the layoffs, Japan doesn't have the job market to support all these teachers (it's hard enough to get work already.) I am guessing that many without BA degrees will go home and many may show up in Korea.

Going from Korea to Taiwan is one thing, going from Japan to Taiwan is another thing entirely...you all may get a few but not near as many as you all are probably thinking..and many who do show up will probably bail after just a few months...

Having spent three years in Japan (teaching for the first year and a half, then working in a financial services firm) I find it very hard to believe that it's "hard" to get work in Japan.

I left Japan in May of this year, and even at that time there was heaps of teaching work, if one was willing to take it, and no I'm not counting Nova.

Now, to be fair, a lot may have changed since May 2007.

Also, I wasn't aware that it was possible to get a Visa teaching English in Japan without a BA degree.

Finally, almost everyone I have met who has been to both Japan and Taiwan, either lived or visited those places...almost all of those people preferred Taiwan.

Now, we may very well have met completely different people. But I don't think it's such a slam dunk choice of "how on earth can you go to Taiwan, Japan is way better."

Funny enough, my best non-English speaking friends in Japan were either Chinese or Taiwanese.

There are many reasons why most of those laid-off teachers won't come to Taiwan...but none of those reasons are because Japan is "better".

Meh. I changed my mind about this after re-visiting the Korean forums (haven't been there in quite some time.) I forgot how mercenary the teachers there can be, and people there were commenting on how most people are in Japan for the quality of life, and in Korea for the money (this coming from the expats themselves.)

Oh, how easily I forget....

So, just like someone changing their bets before a ballgame, I'd like to change my prediction, simply because most ex-pats in Korea are there for the money and that has little interest to Japan expats for the most part.
