Rubbing alcohol = Isopropyl alcohol. It's available at drug stores in Canada and Japan, however I can't speak for the rest of the world.

Just thought I'd dust off this old chessnut Smile

GoJ (I think) got it.

Firstly, shave in the shower by feel. I use Bic single blade disposables and the same soap-free soap that I use for everything else. I keep using a razor until it's so blunt that it leaves clumps on my face. I always cut myself with new blades, but I don't get rashes unless I use ordinary soap.

Secondly, shave with the grain first, then across it, then against it. In some areas you won't be able to go against the grain without a chainsaw massacre or at least a rash, so just go across it.

Ordinary soap is made from lye (a strong alkali used for stripping paint) and fat. Don't use it. Ever. It will trash your skin. There are any number of superior alternatives. Dove is good and widely available.

After shave is silly stuff. Use a moisturiser/balm/whatever. You can use sorbalene but do so in the shower. Let it sit for a while and then wash it off, otherwise it will become slimy when you sweat and your face will look like it's been given a wax and polish.

The crazy peop...um, I mean chicks in my life have all maintained (usually with a scowl) that my face is smoother than theirs. Not bad for a middle aged guy Smile

This thread comes as a bit of a suprise as I was just thinking the same thing.......noting I haven't seen a lass on this thread yet although I did only skim it.

The reason I find this thread funny is that, being the fact I had no to father figure to show me the correct technique to shave, I've kinda done a DIY thing. I've only starting shaving recently and I can honestly say I hate it! It is disgusting!

I found a website about how to shave correctly (yes I did research it as I was pi$$ed with slicing my face to shreads!!!). This is the method they suggested...

1) Put a moist towel in the mike and nuke it until hot.
2) Place on face for 2 mins
3) Proceed to apply a generous amount of cream
4) wait a few minutes and then start to 'down shave'
5) rinse towel and do do steps 1-3 again
6) Proceed with 'up shave'
7) Wash face with mild soap
Cool Apply necessary cream and/or lotions
9) Clean up

Now, honestly boys.....did any of your fathers show you this when you were going thru your teens? Or do you even go anywhere near these guidelines! They seem like a waste of time....

That's a mighty waste of time. I get a mirror and suction it in the shower. Don't bother buying an expensive non-fog mirror, just rub soap on it and it and rinse it off. After my face is good and hot from the shower I shave. I use Mach 3 blades and I think they're the best $ can buy. It has probably been 3 years or more since I last cut myself and that was probably because I was being cheap and tried to get more shaves with the blades than I should have.

This is a funny thread.

I've been shaving my younger brother because he's a hairy little mofo who can't do it without either cutting himself or doing a horrid job and looking like a patch-work gorilla. (Plus I think he's just plain lazy and knows I will)

All I ask him to do is wash his face really well with Dove then let me at it. I keep a wet towel with me handy to keep all areas clean and damp enough that the blade won't snag. Then it's my favorite part.. *Snicker* there's a brand of facial cleanser called "Eskinol: Lemon dew" which we've found is great for keeping your skin clear after a shave. Both my brothers use this method and it hasn't failed to keep their skin impeccably clear and smooth.

Why be a cheapskate ? For a decent shave - go to a barber !

But remember that barbers in Britain may call the police or the local insane asylum if you suggest such a thing.

Anyone got any tips for Brazilians? Whenever I've given a chick one (a Brazilian that is) she always gets a nasty rash. What delicate little flowers they are Smile Doesn't matter if the blade is old or new, or if you use soap or canola oil - always a lumpy, spotty rash, usually followed by ingrown hairs (eewww) So, what's the approved nether-region defoliation procedure? Very Happy

Use warm water, plenty of shaving gel and "Body Shop Mostly Men" aftershave gel immediatley afterwards, preferably at least 30 minutes before you add scented aftershave.

China ..haircut, 50 cents (4 kuai) with a good head massage, 30 yuan ($4). But it still freaks me out when the want to clean my ears with their fingers. Foot massage is also excellent, but then the barber shops tend to merge withe the "red light" barber shops, that offer services that I need to avoid as a single guy.

Since coming to China, I have given up buying the expensive important shaving creams (and I wouldn't trust the chemicals in anything they make here)
I just use hand soap (which is also is antibacterial) and my skin has never been better (I had problems sometimes in America)

This past week, I awoke on Wednesday and was a wee bit weary. I shaved my face, as I do each morning. Yet in my morning stupor, I forgot to shave my scalp, a task I perform every second day while in the shower.

I realized my glaring omission at the outset of my first class. I had a crop of two day old fuzz adorning my usually pristinely shaven pate! Hmm. Two days of fuzz - what time of shadow would that be? Confused

"I have 'weekend head'!" I exclaimed. "This is just not right! I don't feel as though I should be working!" (well, I often feel that way) Wink

Did the students want to rub the fuzz on your head?

I remember basic training years ago. Our first night out our hair was pretty short, but to our joy, there were plenty of girls wanting to feel our heads.

If men get their heads completely shaved at boot camp, so should women. Discrimination !!!

Arioch, you get freaked out when they want to put their fingers in their ears. In Turkey they put some alcohol stuff on a cotton bud type thing, light it and stuff it up your nose and in your ears to get those hairs too small to shave or cut!! Burn baby Burn.
