Seeing as how Nova was predominantly just a way for people to take a years working holiday I doubt most of those people will be slumming it in other Asian countries. Most will just go home or do whatever jobs are available wherever they fancy continuing their year(s) off.
As far as English teaching in Japan goes it could have a few consequences:
The bottom could fall out of the eikaiwa market as Japanese realise that it was all a big scam anyway.
The level of tuition could increaase as a smaller number of schools emerge with qualified instructors (unlikely).
Alternatively salaries will go down across the board as the other large eikaiwa exploit the situation as they realise that everyone's desperate and their staffs options are more limited in a greatly reduced market. Fly-by-night eikaiwa at the bottom of the barrell will increase, you know, those one's that offer 100,000 yen a month!!! We'll probably see more of them.
We could also see the other big eikaiwa expanding if demand for their services increases. |

'Nova are going bust!' rumors have been circulating for years. My friend swore blind that Nova were declaring bancruptcy the following Monday, and that was five years ago!
No reason anyone should have believed them anymore now than then. Nova were always being bailed out. |

Yes but unfortunately the BBC new source quoted was the international news department, intended for use for nationals living abroad, or those with vested interesteds in that part of this world. It is NOT mainstream news.
I note with interest about Australia. I suppose as Australia is closer to Japan it would have more of an impact. But I would be surprised if you can tell me that the story lasted more than 1 day?
The business with embassies helping ex-workers is a local problem, and not international.
Phone home and ask you parents, you aunt, your old office mates. You think they ever head of Nova? Not. |
My Grandfather asked me yesterday how the NOVA situation would affect my decision to go to Japan. I was surprised that he knew about it, so I asked him how he knew. He said that he read it in the paper (He reads the local Herald every day). So the NOVA situation has made it into some of the papers here in Canada. I was actually surprised that NOVA's bankrupcy made it into the papers here. Unfortunately, I could not find the article online.

I spoke to a friend a few months ago who said she was considering going to Japan with NOVA. She had no idea they were near bankrupcy (this was just after the pay delays). Naturally I informed her of the situation. The problem, I think, is that the new teachers going in did not research the situation and that those who were already there were too hopefull that NOVA would make it. |

| There was even an article in the Wall Street Journal (online at least). Obviously it's not accurate that overseas media don't have any interest in the situation. Mostly fleeting interest for other countries, but it seems the situation has been newsworthy. |
