I'm considering TEFL or CELTA, most likely looking to start work teaching (or begin training, looking for an apartment) in Bangkok in November.
I have a BA in English; I'm 44; I have no teaching experience. I'm from Jersey.
I'm curious if there are any teachers who flew NYC to Bangkok. Any recommended airlines? Did you fly one-way or roundtrip? Did you get the 2 month visa first (at the NYC consulate) or just do the 1 month (which I understand is issued upon arrival).
I suppose I'm looking to stay at one of the guesthouses listed in the sticky FAQ, do either a 2 week TESL or 4-week CELTA -- then look for a job, an apartment.
Any personal experiences (what worked for you, what didn't) would be very much appreciated.
I know a lot of these (general) questions are covered in the FAQ, the stickies -- but I supppose I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has come over from the States (especially recently) to do this.
Thanks!

I wouldn't waste my time with a two week Tefl course. If it's not 120 hours + 6 hours of observed teaching it's not worth doing. Your TEFL course provider should help you obtain a multiple entry Non-Imm. "B" visa. They should also help you find a place to stay. You'll want to stay fairly close to where the course is being taught. |

You can fly NYC to BKK directly with Thai airways. I fly asian airlines whenever possible. |

I flew on Thai Airways and it was reasonably priced. Try China Airlines also. They usually have good prices.
Good and cheap guesthouses can be found in the Khao San Road area.
I think CELTA is the best way to go, but any 120 hour TESOL course is OK. 2 weeks is a waste of time and money.
Have you considered Chiang Mai?? Not as much work but a LOT cheaper than BKK and a great place for expats. |
