I am currently visiting my family in Korea (after living with my fiance in Japan for 2 months). I am supposed to be going back to Japan, but this is where my question comes in.

Is it possible for me to go to Japan on a one-way ticket? Thing is, my fiance and I are planning to get married soon, and I plan to switch my tourist visa into a dependent one soon after. By the way, is this method even possible? Is it possible for 2 American citizens to legally get married in Japan?

Anyways, our biggest worry is that Japan won't let me in with a one-way ticket (my family in Korea is trying to buy it for me right now). I have a perfectly good explanation, as well as enough money to buy myself another plane ticket if I have to. Has anyone else had too many problems entering on a tourist visa with a one-way ticket? Please answer soon, and I appreciate any advice anyone would have to give in advance.

Hope this helps. It probably won't answer all of your questions.

edit: it probably won't answer most of your questions Rolling Eyes that's the embassy for you...

Thank you for the link. Unfortunately, it looks like it's meant for those that are getting married to Japanese nationals. I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but my fiance is an American citizen working for the Interac group.

My boyfriend just came over on a one way ticket. He had no problems. This doesn't guarantee that you won't though. If they ask, you could just say that you are taking the ferry back to Korea.

I came to Japan on a one-way ferry ticket (Pusan to Shimonoseki) back in 2002. No problems.
I married my wife in Japan, too. No problems.

Thanks a ton for the replies! I feel less worried now.

AndyH: Are you and your wife both non-Japanese citizens? Also, if you don't mind me asking, what steps did you take to get it done? I've read a dozen times how foreigners marry Japanese citizens, but I have yet to find anything on two foreigners getting married in Japan.

My wife is Japanese, and I'm American.
I had to get my birth certificate from the US, plus documentation related to my divorce from marriage #1.

nabichan, yes, you CAN get married in Japan, even if neither party is Japanese. It's really easy, you just go down to your local ward office/city hall and go to the Registration of Births, Deaths & Marriages section. Just sent you a PM with further details.
