'the level of teaching cannot be satisfying for a PhD ever planning to work anywhere else than HCT'
Is it satisfying for a person with an MA, which usually represents four or five years of higher education-- one or two years after a first degree? And is there ever any recognition of the often stultifying effect of this on the teachers? Perhaps this might account for some of the displacement activities that one spies going on around one in the 'academic' world? |

"I could kick you as easily as drinking water", because he got a C instead of an A?"
To which you should immediately reply "Make your move," sa? |

| If you are an English Teacher they will try to get you for as little as possible. The scale starts at just over 10k/m but with an MA and enough experience you can start on at least 13. I even heard of 1 guy starting on 14+. Just like anything you have to negotiate. If you teach something like maths or engineering then you can usually get more. |

... unless you are from the US or having your financial life in a dollar based economy i dont think it makes a lot of sense to accept an offer of 10k these days. if you are here and have already done so, you may hope to either dive through the crisis and/or get a pay rise (or a kind of pay rise) compared to the last 12%, but if you are not here yet, i would strongly suggest not to come for anywhere around 10k. with inflation at admitted 10% (probably higher in reality) and various cost saving initiatives at hct you may soon be better of - lifestyle wise - giving private tuition to KGs anywhere in europe.
and dont forget to ask those who recommend HCT how long they have been there, because they will be on 18k if they managed to survive the random firings and the multiple heads of instruction at their colleges... and on 18k, of course life is different around here, especially if you are in one of the smaller cities.

probably not. an MA is an MA, 1 yr experience is 1 yr experience, no matter what you teach, and they will argue based on that. plus they get a lot of expat arabs returning from the us/uk now, who are supposedly a huge downward competition in terms of salary and are no risk for doing anything culturally stupid such as dancing in front of class, making references to donkeys, talking about the pub or going there for a beer with their wife... |
