I was wondering what sort of work clothes are appropriate for teaching in southern areas of Taiwan. I have read/heard that Taipei is more conservative, whereas places like Kaohsiung are much more relaxed.
Considering the very hot and humid weather on the island, what sort of dress clothes are appropriate for teaching English in schools for women?

For Work: Is it okay to wear open-toe shoes? Is it okay to wear skirts without stockings or long shorts? Is it standard to wear sleveless tops? (im not talking about thin straps, still respectable). Basically, what can you wear there? I wouldn't want to be sweating to death every in the type of buisness attire that is the norm in north america, england, etc

And more generally, what type of clothes should I pack? I know it's hot there, so should I bring a couple pairs of pants and sweaters?

Slightly confused with the answers to your questions?

Depending on the class to be taught reflects the style of dress in the main. Example most kindergartens/busibans you can get away with a tea shirt and shorts. Stockings in the winter only, most chinese woman dont wear them until the cold weather hits, but for most of us westerners it rarely gets cold.

I would go with one jumper and a light weight rain coat/pants. If you are on the small size these can be purchased in country. BAsically if your a small size you will find most things here, only if you are the large size (thinks about size 16+ - or over 6ft, size 12 shoues etc)

yeah, sorry. I did change the entire post. It was originally about Health Checks, and am satisfied with the answers I received. Big thanks to you both for your replies.

I am leaving very soon for Taiwan and now have to consider what to pack!

jeans, t-shirts and tennis shoes. the taiwanese have issues with bare shoulders, and open toed shoes generally aren't allowed. shorts are usually frowned on, but capris are all right. honestly though, you can get away with almost anything other than tank tops sandals and shorts. one of the girls i work with wears nothing but sweats that i swear she sleeps in and no one cares.

Depends where you work, summer is much more free, open toe is an insult pointing at people especially from a teacher. but old customers are changing, and many people wear shorts and sandals these days.
Im old fashioned so always closed toes, trousers and shirt
