| No, no that can't be right, this kind of thing only happens to foreigners. Don't you know that its a conspiracy? |
Yes yes! It is a conspiracy. They are all out to get me! ,however, my good-hearted nature is merely a ruse! Now that all the employees have been lulled into a false sense of security, I shall hunt them down one by one and exact my revenge! Asking each one if they have insurance or cash to pay for their funeral before they feel the icy cold stab of my dagger between their ribs!
People need to stop projecting and take a minute to slow down a bit.
Take a post for what it is. A grown adult male being asked if he has 45$ and how someone may find that amusing.
No attempt was made to slander Japan and I am hardly a newbie deserving the wrath of long time expats who chose to view an anecdote through their own eyes rather than those of the OP. (who was there )
Would I have posted this if the situation had been similar to those described by markle or reality? No.
I wash my hands of this thread as it is quite plain to see that people are going to ascribe whichever intention they wish to the reasoning behind the posting of this little story.
Death to all middle aged optometry nurses from Nagano, Japan! |

Come on, Yawarakaijin... everybody gets heckled here once in a while. Deservedly so or not.
Your point wasn't totally lost on most of the people who responded. |

It's too late reality. I've been mocked and now I'm out for blood. I can't take it I tell you! I hope you have insurance my friend. |

It would have made more sense if they had mentioned the price, $45, and then asked Is that okay? This question implies two things while giving you information that Do you have money? doesn,t;
1) How much the treatment costs
2) allows you to decide if it is too expensive and/or if you don,t have enough money
ps sorry, the keyboard here has been changed somehow, none of the symbols are where they normally are. |

I read thr OP and thought it was a little funny as many of us have had these experiences before. Then the other posts came from posters who are not seeing the humor.
But I started thinking, ( and not meaning to take the joke out of it but) is it at all possible that she was asking if you had money BECAUSE you didn't have insurance?
Or did she really want to say "Do you have enough money seeing that you don't have your insurance?"
or possibly " Did you bring money with you today?"
I have had Japanese friends say things that make little sense to me and they tell me that that is Japanese, sometimes it sounds like it doesn't make sense but people understand the nuance.
Just wondering. |

Reminds me of when I was on my way to work, without much time to spare, and decided to stop at my bank to pay a bill of some sort.
Even though I told the teller that I was in a big hurry, she spent almost ten minutes conferring with co-workers how to tell me there would be something like a 50 yen surcharge, when she could have just mentioned it to me in Japanese.
I was annoyed at the time, but in hindsite, is just one of those quirky things about living in Japan. |
Piece of advice - NEVER go to a Japanese bank if you are in a hurry. Although 16 people work at my local bank and there are usually no customers, it is not uncommon to spend 20 or 30 minutes there - especially if there is money involved. |

I also suggest never breathing in Tokyo, because the air is dirty. Much better to wait until you are outside the city |

I know, but those 1 week waits between trips to Kanagawa are taking their toll on me ! I mean, have you tried holding your breath for 1 week? I have the 20 minute deal down (time spent meditating while waiting for an answer in class), but 1 week is tough.
Actually though, what he has said about banks seems to be true, hence why the ATM was invented for most transactions.

And hence why we have abandoned cash and use our debit cards for everything. |

Reminds me of going to the doctor recently. I consulted with the doctor, got my lengthy prescription and headed out to the pharmacy. The nurse comes running in sometime later to ask if I have insurance. I tell her I don't, and she tells the pharmacist to cancel one of the medications off the prescription because it's overpriced and isn't really necessary......
At least they only over prescribe when the government is paying |
