There will be a rally in the Zocalo, Mexico City to commemorate AMLO's Revolution Day crowning as the 'legitimate president' of Mexico. This will tie in to the release of the Luis Mandoki and PRD film Fraude:Mexico 2006
Should be interesting to see. PRD is fractured right now, and Sunday's event and movie release may be the first sign of a showdown between AMLO and everyone's presumed 2012 presidential candidate, Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard. |

Interesting to note that AMLO wants to stand in 2012. If he is the president (according to him), how can that be?  |

| Strange how what made the news (government propaganda) was the riot in the cathedral, diverting the public's attention chupacabra style from what was really going on. And no hubo detenidos... I can't imagine who might have been behind this 'distraction'. |

| The riot by PRD hardcore types was enough of a news item that sensible PRD leadership denounced it. What kind of fools walk into a church and start kicking people around? I thought they only did that in 60's Mississippi. If the climate wasn't already so politicized, I'm sure you'd see charges against Senator Rosario Ibarra for inciting such a shameful display. |

According to La Jornada, the whole incident is the fault of the Cathedral bell-ringers for sounding the call to noon mass too long and too loud! |

Yeah, La Jornada is a great, unbiased place to get your news. Also, if you don't like the church ringing its bells, go some other place (please) and protest. Not in the Zocalo. I think that AMLO is now reduced to a joke. PRD should have jettisoned him a long time ago. I agreed with many of the things he said while running for president, but his antics and behavior afterwords showed most people that he's not fit to be the president of Mexico, except in his own, delusional mind.
Mexico needs change. Radical change. It needs to help itself and to reduce poverty. It needs both social programs and foreign investment. The petty politics and rampant corruption here are just another day as usual for most people. The culture of corruption needs to be changed at all levels of society. Why pay tax when it just lines the pockets of some politico, whether they be from the PAN, PRI or PRD?
Education is part of the solution, but its not the solution. Kinda hard to tell people to get an education when they finish high school, uni, and grad school and they still can't find a job.
Mexicans need to look forward to a better Mexico and find out where they fit in to that. Looking to the north and expecting to always have a safety valve there isn't going to cut it anymore. Calderon has some great ideas (Mexico 2030) but it remains to be seen if he can get that translated to action. He's made a lot of progress, but more needs to be done at all levels. People need a sense of social responsibility, not the same old "its not my problem" way of thinking. |

I am aware of the left-wing political bent of La Jornada: I was just presenting another point of view, one that many, Mexicans and others, may agree with, though, I, of course, do not! The rally was held in the Z�calo (I assume with official permission from the DF government) because that's traditionally the place where such gatherings are held in the capital, church-bell ringing notwithstanding.
By the way, Prof. Gringo, I do agree with most of the other comments in your post: Mexico's need for radical change in the near future; the problems of corruption; the pressing need for improvements to the education system; and the ultimately self-defeating strategy of using migration to El Norte as a solution to the problem of poverty and lack of decent-paying jobs for many of its citizens. |
