I'm pretty much set on Mexico now. Which is great. I'm almost pretty certain I'll be enrolling in the IH CELTA course starting early July in Mexico City.
BUTTTTT I will hopefully have enough dosh saved to go to Mexico in late May/early June to do a 3 or 4 week intensive Spanish course before heading to Mexico City for my course and then job hunting.
I would love to spend a few beautiful weeks in somewhere lovely and cheap where there is a language school. Any recommendations for either a place or a school?

123teachme.com is helping me but I need the inside scoop! Smile

You have to be joking. Guatemala is the last place on earth you would experience Mexico. Better to pick Chicago or LA if you really want some Mexican Spanish experience if you're looking outside this country.

Your choices are numerous. Taxco, Puebla, Oaxaca City, San Miguel de Allende, Leon, Guanajuato, Pachuca, Morelia, Veracruz, Guadalajara, Acapulco, Queretaro, Aguascalientes, Colima, and many, many others, with language schools, and every manner of whatever you call 'a few beautiful weeks' and a Spanish course.

Try Antigua, Guatemala. Beautiful city, friendly people and inexpensive. There are many schools to choose from, they all offer one on one instruction and room and board with local families. Just substitute buey for vos and you'll do fine when you go to Mexico. Julio Garcia at [email protected] is one I would recommend.

Guy,

I believe he's looking for Lovely, Cheap and a Language School.
No place in Mexico can compete with the prices of Language Schools in Guatemala. Last time I checked US $500 got you two weeks of morning classes, afternoon activities, and homestay with 3 meals a day.

I suggest Queztaltenango over Antiqua as being slightly cheaper, slightly closer to Mexico, and slightly fewer gringos in town.

Sorry, I didn't mean for my post to come off as it did. You're right, of course, but Mexico is so big and varied you can find lovely, cheap, and a language school for Spanish. I figure if Jake is coming to Mexico, it makes little sense to go to Guatemala. Any savings on that country being cheaper would be eaten up by the additional travel costs.

Taxco is relatively close to Mexico City and offers Spanish courses (sorry, I don't have a school name handy). Beautiful city in my opinion. Cuernavaca is also a major center for Spanish study.

Yeah I recommend Guatemala too. I know people that just live there for awhile and take spanish classes and well...basically relax.

Also I studied Spanish at DUNHAM Institute which you can find online. The spanish courses aren't as cheap as Guatemala but it includes homestay I think. Plus the Spanish teacher there is really good.

It's in Chiapas btw. So that's right on your way to Guatemala anyway.
