| I am a drunk and my students tell me that I shouldn't drink so much . They never ask me to go drinking with them because most don't drink . Lately I have been playing basketball with them . It seems to be their passion . |

Top Tip:
Should you wish to not accept an invitation from a student but at the same time not wish to appear impolite by refusing nor so disingenuous by so creatively excusing yourself, then say: "That's kind of you to offer", and then steer the conversation away. I've found that the ensuing unquestioning confusion on the part of the student is sufficient that you get away with it without a repeat invitation.
(but then I am an unsociable git) |

Excellent tip. I will definitely add this to my bag of tricks.
"That's kind of you to offer. Say, does that cloud in the sky look like a rabbit to you?"
2 minutes later: walking away, whistling happily, guilt-free.  |

| Surely the title of the thread gives the answer? I mean, if the title was "Should I go drinking with some halfwit I met at the bus stop?" you'd say no, right? Why would they being a student make it any better? |

In the last 2 weeks I went to dinner with 2 different groups of my students. They went all out and ordered a ton of food for the 7 of us. At first I stalled them a few times they accepted. They took me to some restaurant in a place I never would have went to only because it was in a back alley.
Food was good, lots of different dishes etc.
The 2nd group was 2 of my students, one of their girlfriends, and me and Scooterbabe. Same deal, lots of food, very tasty and to a place I had never been before. They even ordered me a whole duck to go in a doggie bag...
Synopsis - I am glad I went to dinner with both groups... By the way the first group did not drink beer only Coke and Sprite. The second group the boy had some beer and I had to down a glass with him but we stuck to Sprite.
And they first group had 3 students that consistantly scored F on all the exams, a C student and 2 A students - three pairs all boyfriends and girlfriends.
The second group had one A student and one F student.
Dinners had no effect on my grading system at all by the way. |

Barry I have 173 students- more than half fit the definition of Lazy Rich Stupid Non-Motivated DimWit... |

But this forum is designed for teachers to share their thougths and ideas, no?
The OP's opinion is his students are dimwits, and he has that right to express himself I believe.
I'm sure most if not all teachers who read Dave's understand what he is saying and understand his points and concerns - and I didn't say agree with them but understand them... |

I understand not wanting to call a kid a dimwit in a public forum, even if he/she is.It's not their fault if they're not too bright but sometimes you have to call the situation as you see it, especially if you're asking for others advice.Should the OP misrepresent the situation to spare the feelings of someone who will more than likely never read these posts? |

Well gee, barry, let's take context and intent into consideration, shall we? Here is where I referred to students as "dimwits" (note that I took care to set up context before doing so).

I agree that slandering people for negative intent should be barred from this forum. But use of colorful language to set up the context of a question? Come on man, is that really necessary? Here is the question -- nice and succinct:
