|

I just saw a posting for a university job that has a higher salary (10000 RMB) than what I've read about here on the forums. The ad says they provide free accommodation with that as well as visa support. There are 20 teaching hours in a week (50 min hour).
Is it worth applying for? I'm a new CELTA grad with no other teaching experience, and the add doesn't list any requirements that I don't meet. |

Go for it! What are you waiting for? If its in Zhuhai, the salary sounds about right. I've got a friend (w/ an MA) teaching at a university there who says he's making over 15,000RMB for 16 hours.
I'd say post the name to find out if its legit, but than everyone else would jump on it, so don't. |

You've got a CELTA, but a degree?
If so, yeah go for it. I was getting 8,000 for 16 [the advert said more, but that's what I ended up doing] back 6 years ago.
McGreen, not looking to nit pick [or knit pick, as someone on the China boards loves saying:D ], but......

that's just a typo, right? It's just that I've seen than and then used interchangeably so often lately by those who should know better, I'm getting twitchy. |

Timtastic,
10,000 is not mega bucks, so you can probably apply without much worry as to whether someone is scamming you.
The job might be at a university that offers a joint venture program with another country, like a study abroad program in Canada or Australia. |

Thanks ESL. Its a typo. I have a bad habit of looking at homework and reading Dave's, guess I can't multi-task. |

It also depends on what kind of university it is. If it's "a proper one", it sounds like a great deal. If it's one of those privately-run "universities", bear in mind the kind of students you can expect. They'll almost certainly be from rich families and be students that failed to get into "a proper university". |

What he said. Most expats in China would regard 10,000 per month as pauper's money. It is not megabucks. I make 11500 working at a Chinese primary school, with months' paid holiday and a decent schedule (21 x 35 mins a week). |

Where is the job, exactly? It's a believable salary, especially for the south. Twenty hours a week is higher than usual, but so is the pay, so it doesn't seem so strange. |

It seems like a high salary based on what some of the other recent CELTA grads around me have been getting. I've gone ahead an applied for it. It's my first application after getting certified, so I just wanted to know if it was worth my time. Thanks for the advice. |

That may not be a good sign. Does the word "desperate" mean anything to you? Be sure to ask when they want you to start. If the answer is "tomorrow", keep in mind that the fall semester has about 5 weeks left to go, so you'd probably be replacing someone who's done a runner.
All the same, good luck to you! |

This does not sound like a public uni job to me, they always pay peanuts from what I have seen. |

Sounds good.
I suggest that they will have you doing more than what they are telling you, for that salary. |
