Now is the worst time of year traditionally to find full-time work. NOVA's situation has made things worse.

My advice:

1. Plan ahead. Scour the Internet and decide what jobs look good to you. The two you wrote about in your OP were IMO among the worst anyway.

2. Make plans to come here after January. Then contact those potential employers and let them know when you are coming.

3. Have enough money to support yourself for 3 months.

You have to be physically in Japan to have a chance of getting a good job. Only the 'big' companies bring people over. Also, be prepared for rejection. For every 10 resumes you send out only one is likely to get a response. There are simply too many teachers in Japan at the moment.

This "Elliot Spencer" seems to be teaching all over the world at the moment! Very Happy

And has been doing this for the last year or two.

Here Elliot_Spencer , on May 4, 2007, says that he is already in Japan and "Working for one of the BIG 4":

Just thought I'd try start a small survey to see who we are etc;

1) Where are you?

2) which type of school/establishment do you work?

3) Do you enjoy Japan?

4) How long you been in Japan?

5) How long you planning on staying?

Ok, me 1st -

1 - Tokyo

2 - One of the BIG 4

3- LOVE it

4 - 1 month

5 - Indefinatly

However, on March 7, 2007, Elliot_Spencer claims that he is: a) married to a Taiwanese woman and b) has been teaching ESL for 10 years, and c) is 30 years old.

Hey, I was wondering if someone could help me. I am a UK citizen married to a Taiwanese. My wife and I have been living in the UK for the past 6 years, and her mother is not well. So, later this year, we are deciding to make the move to Taipei FOREVER! ha-ha

I myself have been working for a langauge school teaching ESOL here in England for the past 10 years (I am 30) and that's how I met my wife.

Through research and despite what people say, I'd really like to work for HESS. I know they're not perfect, but then again, who is. They can however offer my security which I need above all as I have a wife and prob her family to support.

Therefore, I was wondering, in advance, If I came over at 30 and worked for HESS, always did a good job (I love teaching, and always give it 110%) is it possible to work for them untill retirement? Or, does there come a point when you get to 40 and they don't renew your contract? Is it also heard of people with permission to stay in Taiwan getting contracts longer than a year.

On June 7, 2007, Elliot_Spencer asks on the Taiwan Forum how to break his contract in Taiwan at a Hess language school in a thread he titled: Breaking a Hess Contract!?

elliot_spencer wrote:
Hey, I recently signed a contract for Hess from the UK. However it states that my contract starts from August 15th and is valid for 12 months... it also states that if I leave employment during the first month I must give 7 days notice and if not I must pay NT$20,000 for my training that would have been completed.

Can I get out of the signed contract or can Hess prevent me from entring Taiwan or getting an ARC and work permit?

Please help
