For that matter: are any of the language schools doing work permits these days? I've been hearing rumors that some of them are........

EF is, though I'm not sure the shorter contracts are getting them. I was told at the dos meeting last month that they wanted everyone legal this year.

I find this interesting considering that at the same time I hear people commenting that it's getting harder to get permits (and renewals). Does EF have daytime hours by chance?

I recently read something that after your first 1-year work permit you can apply for one that is valid for 2-years if you stay with the same employer.
Has anyone done that or ever heard about that? I also read that after 3 years with the same employer in the same profession you can apply for a work permit that is not connected to an employer, but it would only be valid for your profession and it's valid for 5 years.

You can get a resident permit and work visa through ET. It takes about 1 month and 5-6 months respectively.

Daqi, you are in fact 100% correct you are indeed able to apply for longer term permits even if you shift employers, I have remained with the same one for more than 4 years and I have even made them aware that such a thing exists to which they reply " yes we can do that " but of course they don't ,can't for the life of me think why,esp bearing in mind it would save the annual runaround to the yabanci police and the cost associated with that, as well, and then multiply that by the number of people who are foreign at my place with similar time served. The economics make it the right, just, and totally sensible thing to do,but of course when did any of those things have anything to do with the running of a private university?

Ollie, my workplace also renews the visa per year for all the foreign staff. But they also issue new work contracts every year, even for people who have worked there for ages. I talked to a laywer a while ago and she said that was in fact not very legal cause after 2 or 3 contracts the employer is supposed to give you a permanent contract. She said it's probably done to get rid of staff more easily but that the employee loses out on a lot of rights, like extended resign periods, etc.
