Hey Teachers!
Hope everyone is doing well in their respective countries. Some of you may know that I've posted on here before, concerning my imminent move to Latin America. I'll give a brief overview of my situation (again).
I'm 23 yrs old, not a college graduate, speak Spanish fluently. I recently got my TEFL through an online course at i-to-i.com. It's pretty useless from what I gather, but it gave me a good idea of how to teach and some classroom resources that I think will prove useful. I've never taught before in a classroom. I speak Spanish fluently.
My main question is this, how easy do you think it will be for me to teach English voluntarily? I understand that I'm not going to be first choice in many schools as I lack a degree and experience. Therefore I've began to think that it would be best for me to become a volunteer teaching somewhere, to gain experience. Are there any places that you know of that would give me a small stipend and possibly a place to live in return of teaching English?
I'd like to add that earning money is not important to me, it's more about the cultural experience that I'd gain. I love Latin America and I'd like to be able to survive down there, that's all. I'm going down there with about $2500 and whatever tax return I get from the IRS.
Ideas? Comments? Anything useful is much appreciated! |

A free teacher? Lots of places would jump at that. Try volunteerabroad.com or teachabroad.com Or just contact local language schools, the money that you'll get teaching for them will be just enough to survive on. About 500 a month in Peru.
If you're interested in Peru, I know of a few places that need volunteers. AYNI in Piura, and there's some place in Chacapoyas. |

Thanks for the reply Naturegirl!
Peru very much interests me! I did a small amount of research on Piura, Peru. I found a couple places that matched the name. Are you talking about Piura, de la costa? I've found one that is on the coast, and one more located in the interior, but still closer to the ocean than the Amazon. I'd very much like more info on this type of opportunity...what more can you tell me about it? You can of course PM if you like...
This is exactly the type of job I'm talking about, being a free teacher! (In a manner of speaking). I mean, a small stipend or amount of money to "get me by" is all I'd ask for! I'd think that there are loads of schools out there that would want to high a cheap teacher!
Anyone else have any info? |

There-s tons of info on the ULtimate Peru List. And read the stickies, there-s info on Piura. And look at the LA job list. I lived in Piura for two years. Main places to work are UDEP and UCV> PM me if you want into.
Piura-s on the coast.
UDEP pays around 700USD a month. UCV, you-ll make a bit less. |
