I used to go to a Gold's Gym in Chiba and it cost me 10,000 Yen a month. That is about average for any commercial gym in Japan. I have seen some go up to about 25,000 a month.

Tipness daytime only or evening only membership is around 7000 yen. 10000 is pretty standard for a month's full membership.

That kind of thing is expensive in Japan. A single drop-in dance or yoga lesson at a studio typically costs 3000 yen- more than twice what it costs in NZ.

Staying on the topic exercise, I usually play basketball or tennis. Are there any outdoor courts in Osaka? I remember I biked around for hours trying to find a basketball court, but low-and-behold! Nothing. I saw a few tennis courts, though. Maybe there are public indoor courts?

Don't know about hoop in Osaka. Tokyo yes.
For tennis go to your city hall sports desk and ask to book a court. You have to register. That or join a club if you have the coin. Could be quite pricey, same as indoors.
Enjoy,
