I'm a college student about to graduate with my bachelors and I'd really like to find a teaching job in Bali. Is this something that you would deem possible? Or is my head in the clouds? Also, does anyone know much about the job market in Jakarta? I've been reading lots of posts as well as the job boards and it looks like the only schools I can find so far are English First - which I've noticed don't have the best rep.... |

EF don't have the best rep, as you say, but they do have a McSchool in Bali. If you are a fresh college graduate with no ESL certification and no teaching experience, EF will be your only paying gig in Bali.
I love to holiday Bali but would hate to live there. |

Hi. The problem with Bali is that it's a "hirers' market" - everybody wants to work there, so salaries are often lower than for comparable contracts in Java. The other major problem is that everybody says "I won't go out all the time and spend my money in bars and clubs", but everybody goes out all the time and spends all their money in bars and clubs. Finally, where do you go on holiday?
It may be worth considering taking a job in, say, East Java, where temptations are less and you are in with a chance of saving money. That way, you can visit Bali for long weekends and holidays.... |

I have to agree with Atoms for Peace "It may be worth considering taking a job in, say, East Java, where temptations are less and you are in with a chance of saving money. That way, you can visit Bali for long weekends and holidays...."
With some four or five year's teaching experience, I was offered a job at EF Bali, but the salary was strictly base. They take no account of previous work experience.
Without a training course in teaching behind you, you may well have trouble finding a job. It's well-worth doing that TEFL course and learning the finer points of getting across our native language.
However, EF in Surabaya and Malang are often advertising for teachers, and Malang is a pleasant though boring town, and a lot cooler than the coastal towns and cities. |

Thanks everyone for all the info I really appreciate it. As of now I'm signing up for a TEFL course that I can take close by and I'll be working as a volunteer English instructor. So hopefully that will gain me a little experience with the work.
I have a question about Malang though. When you say its cooler do you mean more fun/easygoing? and why so
thanks again to everyone! |

HA HA! It may be kewl man, and I'm sure one might find some night life there, but I didn't go looking.
But, it is some few hundred metres above sea level, and is much cooler (in temperature) than in Surabaya.
We'd go down by small private bus (called 'travels') on a Saturday morning once a month or so, and have a day of shopping in Surabaya, for things which we yearned for - bacon, cheese, weetbix, meusli; window shop at the multi-level malls, drool in the very large computer complex, buy cheap DVDs at Pasar Atoom, eat at a 1km long outdoor dining street and head back early Sunday morning to escape the heat.
The mini buses were quick, dropped you at the door of your hotel, and much less risk of light fingers going through your baggage, as they do on the bus.
You may be far from a beach in Malang, but there are good pools around. Mt Bromo is not so far away, and is worth a weekend trip or two.
EF Malang is advertising now for teachers, so why not make a bid and let them know when you'll be available. nothing ventured.....
I worked for another English school, but from all accounts, EF Malang was OK. PM me for details if you decide on a move. |
