Whats good Pay in Suzhou? Say for a Private Language school with 20 classes 40 minutes in length with no office hours. Any thoughts? Having never been there I'm really not sure about the pay. I've done some research but never as good as hearing from someone who has lived and worked there. Just looking for some general ideas. Thanks.

More seriously, several friends/acquaintances work in Suzhou; a popular place, and deservedly so.
Salaries across all sectors fall in the 6,000 to 8,000 range, with either housing included or a 1000-1500 allowance. The privates [eg Web] seem to want office hours to keep employees from hawking their forks elsewhere.

I know all about where salary ranges fall, that is not what I was asking. I just wanted to find out what the general cost of living is for someone who has lived and worked there. In addition I hoped I might get lucky and see if someone had actually lived and worked there working those kind of hours. In my opinion 7,000 to 8,000 is decent for those few hours. After all, it's not Shanghai, then again, it is close to Shanghai. At the same time I know it's cheaper then Guangzhou as far as cost of living, so I have a good general idea. Was simply looking for something more specific is all. Thanks anyway though for the feedback Very Happy

Generally speaking, besides rent, the cost of living is the same everywhere in China. That has been my experience.

Of course, you may enjoy a few western amenities in certain cities that will cost an arm and a leg. Eat rice and noodles and you'll be fine wherever you go!

I was on 15,000RMB a month free accom, food, no tax.

I have a friend on 23,000RMB (taxable).

Suzhou is a super place to teach. Shop around, and you can fill your coffers nicely.

Wow, 15,000, kind of surprised since this is not one of the Big Hallmark cities in China. Is that just teaching one job, or doe's that include doing a lot of privates? Is that an international school you and your friend are at? Just curious.

You can live a very comfortable life making 6-8000 RMB here. I have everything I need and party my ass off on the weekends... I usually spend about 4k a month.

Tie-ups with foreign schools or universities are the best paid gigs in China. However, you do have to work harder for it.

Socrates,

Anybody who writes " idea's" and " doe's" on an ESL board, is not likely to get a job at a university. The students will spot the spelling mistakes/ grammar/ punctuation oversights within minutes.

HK Space and XJTLU universities are both in Suzhou Industrial Park, and pay 20,000 RMB + for qualified, experienced staff.

Is it possible to rent a house in Suzhou rather than an apartment? If so, how much?

Thank you! I was wracking my brain trying to figure out his previous alias. Yeah, he was the one that would never change regardless of people pointing out the errors and he defended himself by saying this was a message board, grammar and punctuation didn't matter here (somewhat agree). Then, of course, it became a verbal brawl and he got more and more defensive and others got more and more insulting and *poof!* he was gone one day.

Although I live in Suzhou, I don't want to advertise my school in fear of someone like this getting hired, thus putting a black mark on all the halfway decent FTs we have here!

Actually tomorrow it will be a month to the day that SS last posted. After our dust-ups in early December he apparently has also gone *poof*!! I pointed out early on that his style was sickeningly similar to NR's. I believe both he and NR also claimed they were shrinks. I'm thinking for some reason he pissed his parents off and they decided to pull his desk top out of the basement Cool Exclamation Exclamation

Zhuhao,

Shawn
