Hi guys,

can anybody suggest what the best places are to get Bahts in exchange for foreign currency (namely, Saudi Riyals)? I doubt if going to an exchange office is a good idea, so I was thinking of banks. Anybody has a better suggestion? I am going to Phuket, by the way, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

If you click here, you'll find today's exchange rate for Saudi Riyals (and other currencies) at Siam Commercial Bank, a well known bank in Thailand with branches in most cities and towns. You can then compare their rate against other banks and exchange offices and see who's offering the best deal.

The golden rule is to change the Saudi riyals into dollars as the rate is fixed. You should then get a good rate in Thailand.

I have always found Siam Commercial does a slightly better rate than Bangkok Bank.

My experience was that Thai money changers really didn't want Saudi Riyals. Good advice to change into US$ first. There are more Siam Commercial Banks in Phuket than you can shake at stick at.

The GCC countries are thinking of creating a currency basket and dropping pegs to the dollar. It would be a windfall for those like me who've been working there recently ando got paid in local currency, as we all sustained some kind of financial loss, thanks to the dollar's devaluation. So I decided to hold on to some of my Riyals, hoping that Allah enlightens their minds. On the other hand, I don't think that the dollar is bound to stop its downfall within soon.

Anyway, I changed the money in Abu Dhabi at the airport and the office gave me a 8.2 rate, which is not bad at all. I arrived in Bangkok, and I saw an office in Rambuttri that changed Riyals at 7.2 - quite a huge difference. In general though, it is banks that give you the best rates, I noticed.
