What many Americans living in Japan hoped to get away from has occurred here in the land of the rising sun. A terrible incident.

There's a chance that the shooter was a foreigner. I know this sounds selfish, but let's hope he wasn't. We don't need any more bad press.

Quote:
Sources at the sports club said that recently Kuramoto had been stalked by a foreigner.
Mainichi Shinbun

Anyway, I hope those who were wounded recover fully, especially the kids.

Japan Today says the name of the dead man suspected of the shooting is Masayoshi Magome, so unless he was a zainichi Chinese or Korean then I don't think we have to worry too much that he was a foreigner.

Let's hope there aren't any copycat shootings.

This begs the question, why was it so important for the Mainichi Shinbun to throw that bit about being stalked by a foreigner into the newspiece? This is not the first time I've seen it done. Did that information help the general public to help the police? Better yet, what service was provided to the news readers by putting in such a statement?

I try to ignore the occasional discrimination I face as a foreigner in this country, partly because I may misunderstand the intentions of others from time to time and partly because most of the time, life is pretty comfortable for me here.
But, it's hard to dismiss the feeling that xenophobia is deeply rooted in the culture here when such crap is posted in newspieces at times when very few, if any facts about the cases under examination have been revealed.

Yes, xenophobia is alive and kicking in probably every society, but how it expresses itself will vary. Fortunately, it generally isn't violently expressed here, yet in the areas of getting housing and jobs it definately has an impact, regardless of the dismissals of some of your Japanese associates.

More than anything, I just wish these newspapers would at least get a slap on the hand for printing such shyte. In other nations, major news sources have been sued successfully in cases where it was believed that such statements could bring about anti-foreigner sentiment.

Anyway, there are lots of good points about life in this country and it's not worth beating this issue to death. I'm confident this kind of problem will become diminshed in the future here.
