Probably I would find out a song or two that your student enjoys and look at those lyrics and also a song that you particularly enjoy. that way you can both talk about why you like that song and what parts you specifically enjoy. Maybe you might not like your students song or your student might not like your song so it is pretty safe to go with one of each that way you can both enjoy it.
nowadays music genres can be so broad and inclusive that what you might think is heavy metal/rock might not be at all what the student is expecting or the other way around.
Oh usually for metal and rock it can be safe to go with classics like Sabbath, Metallica, Motorhead and their ilk. i have found AC/DC to be more popular in Japan that I would think they are in Australia - their home country. not to say that newer stuff is any less metal.
as for more specific songs and other artists i'll leave it up to you as each individual's music taste is their own and thats how i think it should be. |

| I think you could at least make a good game of charades out of some 2 Live Crew lyrics. |

How about Aerosmith Don't Want to Miss a Thing? It's positive, clean, and easy to understand.
i could stay awake just to hear you breathing,
watch you smile while your sleeping,
while your far away and dreaming,
i could spend my life in this sweet surrender,
i could stay lost in this moment forever,
every moment spent with you is a moment i treasure...
It's not the most exciting song, and in fact more balad than typical metal song, but people in Japan like to sing it at Karaoke and the lyrics are inoffensive, so you're not likely to raise an eyebrow from anyone.
There are lots of lines he could lift for messaging girlfriends on his keitai.
The song's useful for teaching the very useful phrases "I miss you" and "I don't want to miss -". The song also has the modal "could" which is terribly useful for talking about future possibility, e.g., Hey, Taro, what do you want to do when you graduate? Well, I could go abroad or I could join the SDF." |

AC/DC should be easy to follow if you choose the right song.
Highway to Hell; Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap); It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'Roll); and, of course, Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round to be a Millionnaire), which contains the hilarious line, "Hello Howard [Hughes, we assume], how ya doing friend, next-door neighbour? Oh yeah! ..... Get your fucking jumbo jet off of my airport!" |

Well, it ain't heavy but I always think that 'Every Breath You Take' by The Police has fairly easy lyrics (well, except for every claim you stake) as do some of the slower RHCPeppers' songs (My Friends, Under the Bridge'. Elton John also has some easy ones like 'Daniel' and some simple Beatles' songs are easy to teach too. You'll just have to look through your ipod and you'll find a suitable one. I'm sure there are some online lessons along these lines too.
It's a great way to engage students. Many are ungrammatical but that's the way it is. |
good way to gage the students and Romantic.. |

hi tara, I just want to say that it is DEFINITELY a worthwhile endeavor to teach through music.
I'm (slowly, but surely) doing the same thing with hip-hop!
please keep us posted on your progress |
