Hello!
Is it possible to ship some things to the main Hanoi post office and have them held there for me? I know that it can be done in Thailand, but haven't heard anything about Vietnam.

Can't tell you what / if there's a price differential between using snail mail and Fed Ex from your point of origin - that will obviously be homework for you.
However, my suggestion - as Fed Ex is just round the corner from the Ha Noi PO- would be think about consigning stuff via Fed Ex to be collected from their office.
Ha Noi PO doesn't seem to have a great rep (second hand info not deeply personal first hand experience) even for getting letters to intended recipients.
