Canadain tax thingy, eh?
If you work in a country with a tax treaty with Canada, and pay taxes in that country, then you don't have to pay income tax in Canada (provided it's that simple - ie no income in Canada, etc.)
If you are a non resident, then no taxes either.
I'm also pretty sure that earning an income below the poverty line/certain level (which I do in China ) also offers immunity.
Canada has an embassy in Tokyo, and a consulate general in Osaka, and maybe one or two more floating around. In China the embassy is in Beijing (duh) with CGs in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and one more somewhere. So that's, what, 5 ambassador/CG wives in a country of, what, 1.2 billion. These wives come from a social strata that is usually educated - she'd like as not have at least a BA - and could work as an EFL teacher legally - and get her own work visa if it's an issue I'm sure - in either country.
Just because a family is rich shouldn't preclude them from having 2 incomes. "Sorry, Mrs Gates, you can't have a career or even a part time job to kill boredom. Your husband is just too Gand Hoover Damed rich."
Even if a country is seething with Canadain CGs (as far as I remember no country on earth is), there's only one per city. So that's one CG wife per city.
So maybe she lands a good job 100% guaaranteed. And if she tried, she wouldn't at home? Fact of life, n'est pas? (Sorry, as a Canadain message it must be bilingual.)
What about wives of Amercian business men? Or wives of male ESL teachers? |

They remain residents and have all the benefits. They just keep this new income hidden. It's called dodging your taxes and is illegal.

You know this for certain now?

2. Are they allowed to work according to Canada's external affairs laws?
3. Are they paying taxes?
I want to know 2 and 3. Might just write to Ottawa myself |

You missed my point. They are usually working ILLEGALLY and NOT paying taxes on their overseas earned income.

Did I? Your oritional point was:

| I've been thinking these wives are taking jobs away from other TEFL teachers. Aren't their families already making enough money? Are they even legal to teach on their government visas? Are they taking advantage of their embassy/consular privilages? Would another teacher dare disagree with them when their hubby has power at the embassy? |
If you've ever had to deal with an embassy/CG, you'd realize how little clout they really do have. As I said before, any qualified private citizen can get legal work permits to teach TEFL in every Asian country I know well.
What about wives/dependants/husbands of GIs stationed overseas? Esp in South Korea where a) there is a fairly large GI community and b) strict visa laws? |

It has been my experience that in places like Japan, the Gulf, etc..
where there is big money with professional engineers etc... The wifes
get bored and take teaching jobs.
This is not a Canadian thing, it is a British, Irish, Welch, etc..in the Mid east thing which happens.
Who cares, do your job. If you are worrying about what someone else
is doing , chances are you have too much time on your hands. |

I simply hope that the Canadian embassy/consular spouses follow the visa rules of their host nations and follow the rules of the Canadian government.
Whether you disagree or not, "doubleagent" means nothing. But if the Ambassador or Consul General knows what is going on I'm SURE they will have a different opinion than you.
CANADIAN SPOUSES OF EMBASSY/CONSULATE EMPLOYEES FOLLOW THE VISA RULES AND FOLLOW YOUR GOVERNMENT'S RULES. DON'T BE CORRUPT!

So Ted you "know for a fact" of 5 such cases. Your energy might be better spent contacting a big-city Canadian newpaper. Corruption in the civil service always makes a good story. The women and children make it even better.
I don't care myself but I don't believe it either. Hard to see a career diplomat risking his overseas post so his wife can work in a kiddie school. I would suggest it is legal. I might also add (since it just seems like an anti-Canada flame from a new member---again) that I knew of a lot of US Army wives teaching in Seoul. They had no degrees and took crappy jobs like phone teaching. I could not care less if they pay tax or if it is legal. We all do things here-except for a few saints maybe. What about that dinner your boss paid for hmmm?? Will that be on your next return?? |

TED - seriously, I have a great idea for a new career for you!!!!!!!!
Racehorse jockey.
You see most current jockeys dismount and quit a race when their horse breaks a leg and falls down. I think you could be counted on to stay astride your mount and whip him until he got up and finished the race! |

Hey Hog Guru,
If even one consulate or embassy official hears about Dave's and reads this post then those embassy cheats are in HOT water and will be forced to follow the rules and resign.
It only takes one person with some POWER (which fortunately so many people who posted here LACK!!!!)
Despite what the "life is hopeless" morons have written.
