Its going to be more of a paper tiger if Ft's don't even try to fight for the rules this organisation is supposed to uphold Idea

Two days for Xmas is written into my contract. At my school this only applies to FT's and (oddly) international students get one day off, so all the Chinese have to work as normal as we feast merrily..

That last bit should have read D ICKENS. I know his works are not exactly high art but I would have thought at least we could mention his name...

Overtime, time and half, double time, etc. I find it funny that so many people want to apply western rules on their host country. Yes, if you get it written into your contract, more power to ya'. Western standards do not apply here - this is China, not your home country. Get over it and live by the customs of China or leave.

I just don't get it.

Well since our host country insists on giving us the title - Foreign Expert - why should it cause so much consternation that in most cases a lot of "western' is thrown into any Ft employment!!!!!!

Maybe we should ask our host country to invent another title - Trying My Best To Be Chinese Expert Question

There is no right for holiday or time off for Jews in China - per the SAFEA contract.

There is, if you look again. and I enncourage you to use them

Also, they are days off, not days to be rescheduled

Again, one of the main reasons I encourage people to use these days is because it is a constant struggle, workers vs. administration. I don't mean this in a combative way, but a realistic way. Some who have been here a while have seen a lowering, not a raising of benefits, in great part because there is someone who comes for a year or two, willing to sacrifice allfor the company, for the school.
I am not a big union man, but I understand this is why unions are so strict that breaks must be observed, vacation time must be observed, etc. I am willing to bet you want these back in your homecountry. but as soon as enough people are willing to say to the boss, oh, you don't have to pay me holiday time, then the bos will take this for granted, and he will look for another benefit to cut. It is the nature of man (yes I have been boss and low man)

Of course, no one has to take the day given, but when we hold schools accountable, this profession will be more professional

"oh, we didnt tell you about those holidays because the last FT here never took them."

this statement is well within the realm of possibility and i'm sure it has already been put into play somewhere over here.

happens all the time My current school, when I first came, had in the contract free visit to a local place. teachers didn't fight for it, nw it's gone. every chinese department has an end of year party, for the laowai this has no vanished etc

I would say now adays you do not have to even be a practicing Chistian to observe Chistmas.

And so it should be. Yule Tide, the winter solstice festival, was celebrated for a good 2000 years before Christian missionaries arrived in northern and central Europe. Given that China lies in the northern hemisphere the original purpose of the festival is very easy for Chinese people to understand.

To me, Christmas as a holiday - it was always a time for peace and goodwill, even in pagan times - is part of my ethnic tradition as a European.

I'm not too sure whether this is SAFEA itself, another incarnation of SAFEA, or some other body which is involved in deciding the structure foreign workers are to exist within, but according to its website xmas is a two day break (along with some other "foreign" religious holidays).

Article 17:

http://www.gxlztc.net/xzbm/gjjlc/zhidu/cailiao/国家外国专家局、财政部《外国文教专家工资和生活待遇管理办法》.doc

Myself, taking two days off at xmas would force the final two days of exams to be rescheduled, an inconvenience I'd rather not have to deal with this semester.

Then again, this same site also states that those working for five years straight in China, and who intend to continue being employed, must leave China for two years before returning to resume earning their rmbs.

Instituted confusion.

Of course, you could take off a diferent two days in lieu Christmas, but at this point ...

Yes, I do know of people actually told they had to leave for one year, I thought it was one year, after being here for five years. it is or was a real rule for teachers ... mostly unobserved unless they wanted you out for some reason

Well, geez, I'm in the middle of my 5th year now and just wrapping up the first quarter of my current 2-year contract. TPTB at my school have said nary a word that I'll have to leave next summer for a year or so. Is there any validity in this? Do I need to explore this scenario?

I hope you realize that today (Thursday) is also a legal holiday under the SAFEA contract for Muslims, but guess what my College closed down for the day so that all Muslims could go home. All teachers, Han, Muslim and us two foreigners don't teach.

MY supervisor warned me make sure I took Monday and Tuesday off for Christmas. After a discussion, I told him I would rather have Wed and Thurs off. No problem.

It comes down to the fact that I must take two days off, but not necessarily Dec 24 and Dec 25.

I've got a good boss and a great place to work.

Mpho

Which Muslim holiday is it you are mentioning?

Today is Greater Bairam I believe. But according to the SAFEA contract only Lesser Bairam is a provided holiday.
