If you want to know more about the 'terrible price', I recommend a study of Doctor Faustus.

Friend of mine is currently considering a job with KFUPM as an ESL instructor.

Ironically he used to work for BAE but left and he can't get back there.

I think he mentioned 13K riyals a month as a salary which is more than what teachers were getting there a few years back when most were on 9 or 10k a year.

I still think this is a pretty good gig and if you are single you probably can save 10k riyals a month which is good by anyones standards and you have to consider the working environment is a lot easier than many other places.

For ESL teaching this is a good gig.

Where else are you going to save 2.5USK a month and not be too stretched in the ESL world?

Of course if you are really concerned about money get out of teaching and do something else!

The 'solitaries' at KFUPM may even save more than this. Those with families to support in or out of Kingdom probably save a lot less. Remember that holidays at KFUPM are long and that can be the time when your savings disappear !

With the falling dollar, salaries in KSA are worth less. The cost of living has increased dramatically in the last 12 months.

"some of the US military are still lucrative. But with those jobs there is a terrible price to pay. "

I would really like one of those jobs which are still lucrative even if there is a terrible price. Can someone point me towards one of those? Please?

Booz Allen
Raytheon
Vinnell

Men only, so forget that Sara ! US citizens or residents only is usually the rule. Don't forget to read "Dr Faustus" and consider the implications of signing up with You Know Who.

Dear Saral,

Scott forgot to mention his bete noire, BAE Systems.

The so-called "merchants of death" will offer you something in the region of 42,000 pounds sterling a year, plus three leaves, free accommodation, free food, free transport to and from work, a share incentive scheme and a pension. If you are male and qualified. A Kiwi would have no trouble getting in.

The "terrible price" you have to pay for this is to teach seven 45 minute classes a DAY, to cadets who are basically sleep-deprived. For one of those lessons the cadets would be in a language lab, or computer lab, and you would get a break, but the cadets would not.

If you want to get solvent, or add to your bank balance, or need a bolt hole for a couple of years, you could do a lot worse.

Dear scot47,

"At KFUPM people who have left often come back. Must mean something !"

My guess would be that very often it means DESPERATION, caused by LACK OF CASH.

But, of course, I suppose they could also be coming back for the night life.
Regards,
John

I think some of the people coming back had taken up employment elsewhere in the Gulf.

After leaving, some find find that it really was better back at old alma mater KFUPM ! The salary may not be top dollar but the holidays are nice.

The accommodation may not be up to ARAMCO standards but the students are easy to get on with.

I've heard the staff there are very nice to work with, too. One of them told me himself.

I'm thinking of taking a KFUPM job at the ELC. Don't scare me with all this talk. I trust that things have improved for 2008.
