I'm familiar with the DLI in Monterey, as several of their teachers were enrolled in my MA program. I didn't know that they also hired English teachers, though. It did seem like a good, stable job, but with quite a long application process. And oh, to live in Monterey again!

Yes, I know what you mean. I was only 19 years old during my time there, too young to appreciate it. I used to take drives through Carmel Valley Drive over into Salinas just for fun. I miss those days.

Aren't these the guys who run the EFL programme at Guatanamo Bay, America's most exclusive residential school where people whose English wasn't good enough to get them a private pilot's licence get retrained?

Oh, geez! It had to get political, didn't it?

Still this does bring up a good question about the job: Do you feel you are primarily an English teacher or a cultural ambassador?

I think that is a sign of deep niavity: to crow about having a Federal job ( and not in a parcel carrier), in defence, at that and not expect any "political" comment.
English teacher or cultural ambassador? These people will be teaching the military in US client states useful phrases like "blue on blue", "electrodes" and "head bag".

Skipping back to the reminiscing of Monterey, I also lived there while attending the Monterey Institute of International Studies. I lived just a couple of blocks from DLI and knew some of the instructors there. I left in 1981 and have only been back a couple of times since then.
I didn't know about the DLI center in Texas; it sounds interesting.

I must offer you an apology. Had I known your comment originated from jealousy, I would not have been so blunt in my response. Please forgive.

Hmmm, I was also there from 81-82 in the Czech department. Maybe our paths crossed. I really, really enjoyed my time there. That part of California is amazing and I would love to go back there some day as well.

Take care

Sorry to disappoint you, Sadebugo, but far from being jealous, I pity you for your lack of moral responsibility.

So you work for the US military as an English teacher? Sounds tense.

I also attended DLI in Monterey way back in 86... in fact, first they shipped me to DLI San Fran but a couple of days later decided they didnt have space in their Korean class there (grrrrrrrrr) DLI San Fran got shut down not too long after that (too expensive to run and too many peacniks giving the base trouble tho the land is still federal land)

Monterey is gorgeous but unfortunatley I "fell" into a DLI marriage (yeah like it wasnt my fault! Laughing ) DLI marriage = marrying someone you just met at DLI because youre away from home (usually for the first time) and young and stupid. Most dont last 2 years but mine lasted 14 (13 years too long) But I digress..

If I wasnt so happy working in Mexico, I sure would look into DLI Texas

Just a side question (side stepping the political landmines), how expensive is it to live in the Monteray area nowadays? From what I understand, most areas in California are prohibitively expensive for buying housing.

Also, I notice on the job listings for USAJOBS, that the salary range is wide, from 25,623.00 to 116,033.00 USD per year. Is the starting job at the lower range (which would be quite a bit lower than what I make now with quite a bit more time off as well)?

Yeah, that was a wonderful year and my first time in California. Ha, ha! I hear you. The DLI marriage was the running joke the whole time I was there. I managed to miss out on that one though. I went back to Monterey in '95 for a visit and it had really changed a lot from the early '80s. Still, it was great to reminisce. I had my first really serious relationship there with a woman from Salinas. Ahhh, those were the days . . .

I really don't know too much about the DLI in Monterey. I have heard rumors that housing is provided on Ft Ord, but I can't confirm that. You might want to contact someone from their website to ask specific questions. I didn't apply there because I wanted to continue traveling and DLI in Texas really facilitates that.
