Hi,
Lots of good information here but i wanted to know if during the exam, you need to take off your clothes for the physical check up? I have leg swelling and though I have no pain, it is visually obvious. Standing and teaching is no problem for me however they, the doctors, may want to fail me. Any thoughts? Thank you

You won't need to take off your cloths. Even for the chest x-ray I just wear a cotton shirt and only take off my bra.

No, you don't have to remove anything unless it has metal wiring. Therefore jewellery might have to be removed. But don't fret. It's not an army medical and they don't get out the rubber gloves at any time!!

You won't need to remove any clothing. The doctor will interview you and look at your ears and eyes as well as your arms to make sure you're not trembling. If something is abnormal, the doctor will note it on the form. Then your employer may have to write a letter to the government stating that you are okay when he/she applies for your ARC. Minor health conditions and abnormalities are not going to preclude you from being allowed to work in Taiwan. At most, it will require one more step in the beaurocratic process.

Having HIV, TB or another serious condition is a different story, of course.

The first time I did this, I went to the front desk and said I wanted a physical exam. The woman started booking time with doctors. Then I interrupted to explain that I needed a physical "for work" and she got that

Yes, remember to make it clear that you are getting a check for your ARC as a teacher. "ARC" seems to be the magic word.

I went to the American Citizen Services website and no specifics on the checkup.

Has anyone taken the health check within the past 6 months and:

Do they give you a paper stating what they are checking for in the blood test?

I have read on this board about HIV.
OK, in the USA not hiring you for this is discriminatory and cause for a painful lawsuit. Fair enough its their country their rules.

Someone else mentioned drugs. Okay what list of drugs are they testing for?
I have never heard of drug testing by blood sample.

Does anyone have specific concrete info on this?

Someone else on this board wrote that urine testing is no longer done. Confirm or deny?

I have read of Thailand police raiding nightclubs and piss testing patrons and workers looking for amphetamine usage.

1. Brief conversation with a doctor about your medical history.
2. Weight and height measurements.
3. Blood pressure measurement.
4. Eye sight test.
5. Chest x-ray.
6. Blood work.

The test takes about 1 hour in total. Results come back in about a week.

Perhaps you could check into the Thailand forum about this. In Taiwan this does not happen. The only thing they do is raid night clubs, and look to see if foreigners have their ARC's with them.

In the past (several years ago) they checked for amphetamines in the urine test, but since that test isn't done any longer its not an issue. The only urine test is for women, and it's for pregnancy, as they won't issue a work visa to someone who is preggers.

I've taken the health check twice since being here, there has never been a urine test. No men that I know have had this test done (excepting the long timers that experienced the amphetamines test years back)
