Hello helpful people.
I have one of those super-duper 6 month multiple entry f visas from HK.
When i leave my current job I want to do some travelling around. Does anybody have any experience with extending these visas in country? I found a website from Beijing that mentioned the need for a letter from a business in china for the extension. making another trip to HK is just going to be a hassle. Cheers calum |

If you want to do some travelling why not enquire about a tourist visa. I am sure the PSB would grant you a month or two tourist visa. |

of course for an anwer that is guaraunteed, check with the PSB. But yes, if you are on a visa and in China legally, you can change to a tourist visa. It does not work the other way around. If you come in on a tourist, you must leave the country for the z or f (legally) |

When I came to China I had an F visa, as did all the other foreigners at our university. The local police came through the city, checking work documents and all of us were given 2 weeks to get proper working Z visas or face deportation. The school immediately got Z visas for us. F visa is illegal for use as a working visa. That's what we were told and as much as I can tell is true. |

Yeah I know, but I'm only here for a few months. I was told it was just a grey area.
Aside, any suggestions as to which city would be the most helpful for downgrading at the PSB? I've heard definitely not BJ.
Cheers |

First try to get the f visa extended. Why bother trying to get a different visa when the PSB can simply extend it if you speak to the correct person and perhaps have the correct reasons. |

Yeah... but aside from travel I don't have a good reason. Are the PSB likely to change it just to help a guy out? |

Really you wont know until you inquire.
Spending money to travel in China is a good reason I would think.
Ask for a 60 day extension and tell them you want to go to various cities for travel or "business" reeasons.
Maybe they will give you 60 or 30 days if you never had an extension before. |

I personally would guess the PSB in province wouldn't re-up your f visa. But converting to an L visa is no big deal, getting the L visa extended is no big deal. But it doesn't hurt to ask the PSB .... as long as you presently are here legally |

I would say that if you have a valid visa then you are here legally, no? |

You are only here legally if you are conducting yourself within the terms of your specific visa. |
