My head is swirling with information. I want to just have a list of what needs to be done, leaving nothing out, starting from:

1) Find a school to work for

and ending at:

99) Start working

Can someone please fill in the gaps? Which documents to prepare, what to do with them, what else (medical, police check etc) to do...

sorry if this sounds blunt, but are you serious?

i mean its one thing to ask direct, specific questions that you may have, but to ask for us to lay out step by step for you what you need to do is a but much don't you think?

all the information you need is on this website, why not read the information, write it down, and compile a list for yourself...

if you aren't ready to do the work now, and find the information about what you need to do to move here, then maybe you aren't ready to move here

most of the long-timers here are a helpful bunch, but i think this kind of question abuses that sort of helpful, friendly nature...finding your own way is part of the challenge of moving to Taiwan, if you just had everything laid out for you on a silver platter, in my opinion, it would be very boring

OK OK OK, that would make it too easy, I know...

A couple more questions, then:

Will I need to do a police check/criminal record check in my home country (as is now required in Korea), and if so, can it be done while overseas?

I intend to go to Taiwan without going to my own country first. Documents required for Taiwan: Passport, Degree, University transcript (must the transcript be sealed?), ESL Certificate, passport photos. Are copies ok if notarized by a Justice of the Peace in my own country?

For Taiwan, a police certificate (check) is not required by the government. It is required by some schools. It's easy to get one in Taiwan, costs NT$250 and takes three days to process.

The standard documents you need to submit for Work Permit and Resident Visa in Taiwan are as follows (and as someone mentioned in the other thread, the school should do all the submissions for you):
- a health check *
- 2 copies of your passport (every page, each signed in blue ink on the margin)
- 2 copies of your degree ** (each signed in blue ink on the margin)
- passport photos (a total of 14 for all the paperwork)
- a one-year contract signed with the school you will work for

* Basic physical + chest x-ray + blood test, completed on the proper paperwork - can all be done in Taiwan, takes a week to get the results from the hospital

** Note you don't need to give the school or the government your original degree, but you should have your original degree in Taiwan with you in case the government asks to see it - also, transcripts are not required by the government

Unless you are from South Africa, nothing needs to be notarized or authenticated by a JP, etc. (If you are from South Africa, your degree needs to be notarized.)

Hope that helps.

Stupid question bur very urgent.

I am from South Africa. I brought an extra copy of my degree, but it's not notarized. Can I get it done in Taiwan, or do I need to get it ASAP to SA and get it done there? I had a notarized degree, etc ,but my first school has that now, and I am changing jobs...let me know PLEASE!

Thanx a bunch!

Hi Scarab,

You will need to have the degree copies notarized in South Africa. It can't be done in Taiwan. As luck would have it, we very recently (yesterday) heard that the TECO office in Pretoria is now helping people to get their documents notarized and including returning them to you in Taiwan via UPS. They charge a fee (R 500) but it seems like a very reasonable one as it includes all the involved costs. I have a document from one of the TECO officers about the process and how to get it all done. If you PM me with your email address, I can email the document to you.

I'd also say, check everything with your school. They should also know how best to assist you in getting this done, with regards to the Taiwan end of things.
