Hi there

I am planning on heading over to VN (HCMC) in mid March with the hope of working for some time there.

At present I am waiting to hear back from ILA about getting on their 31 March CELTA course but I have the choice of doing a TESOL course here in Australia prior to heading over there.

Finally for my question. Will it be easier to get work with one or the other of those certificates? Also with looking for work I guess once there finding schools and knocking on doors is the thing to do but any other recommendations on trying to find something prior to leaving here.

Thanks for any help.

Mario

Hi there,

As long as they are either the Cambridge CELTA or the Trinity TESOL or an equivalent recognised course i.e. approx 4 weeks intensive, about 120-150 hours course length and include observed teaching practice, then it doesn't really matter and you'll be able to find work easily with either certificate.

It's up to you whether you want to get here and come oand knock on doors or apply from home - there's advantages and disadvantages to both but either way, you shouldn't have any problems finding work once qualified

Two certificates are unnecessary.

Celta itself is fine and does not need to be added to with anything. Am not sure which other TESOL certificate you are referring to but keep in mind that NEAS, the governing authority in Australia in all things ELT only recognises a few certificates. I know the Celta is one of them, the other TESOL cert you are looking at may be worth running by the NEAS requirements to ensure that if you ever do want to teach back there that your investment now will allow that.

Taking a job before or after...... if you take the course here in VN at that time, you will have 4 weeks to hit the pavements and have a look for the best prospect. At the end of your course, if you have everything together you should not have to wait long at all to get yourself a full teaching schedule. That time of year things are well on the up.

Check other threads here for views on the before or after.
