You are planning to go to Abu Dhabi and then look for a job? That is not the way the Gulf works... unless you are going there with a spouse who can provide you with the residence visa. Are you a teacher? What are your credentials and experience? Or are you not looking in education? Google would be your best source.

Beware of all employment agencies in the Emirates that you find on the web or even in country. Most are a scam - they take your CV and make you pay... and that is the last you hear from them.

The best approach is to read around on here and once you know the names of the employers, you can even move out to the search here and google. Unfortunately, your lack of an MA will block you from the best of the university jobs. You will have better luck with only a BA+Cert if you have experience teaching academic English at tertiary level or have taught Arabic speakers.

If you are thinking about international schools, the best of that lot requires a teaching cert from your home country.

That is about all the advice that can be given without more specific questions. Beware of recruiters and agents... anyone that wants money from you.

Some nationalities are now permitted to be in the UAE without more than a tourist visa - Canadians, Brits, US citizens and Australians I think.

Brits have always been allowed to come in the country and stay indefinitely, but that isn't a work/residence visa. Then, you get into the problem of local hire if you find the job from in-country.

I'm wondering if that Berlitz in AD is somewhat new? Berlitz Dubai was offering expat contracts a few months ago (something they hadn't done previously as they relied on local hires). If my memory serves me correctly someone was on this board stating that they were offered 10,000 plus airfare. The cost of accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is so high that you could easily spend half of your salary on that. Money-wise, if they're offering you something in this range you can survive, but I wouldn't count on having a car, saving money, paying any bills at home, and/or taking regular holidays.

i am in Dubai, on the ground now, I have done Abu Dhabi

i am havgin the worst time ever trying to just go and find a job- and I don't have an MA, this is killing me

I suggest- DO NOT TRY THE UAE WITHOUT A LARGE CASH RESERVE AND/OR A MA- period

i did ADU in Abu Dhabi- baaaad idea (nuff said, check the post)

I am lucky to have apossilbe job offer in Knowledge Village, and this was fro a friends introduction- they pay 13,000 a month for 120 hours, but i must spend about4/5000 a month on housing then 2000 renting a car

and the red tape here is no joke

VS is correct- the Middle East, especially the UAE, is not a "just looking place"

I have done China, Korea, India, Russia, Saudi, UAE- you can do china and Kroea and just look, easy/cheaper

and finding a "a real job" in biz ain't that easy either- 300 CVs, local freinds and only 3 soft offers

and still no contract

Moscow actually looks easy compared to Dubai

A word in your ear Chuck if things don't blossom for you here soon.

Make sure you keep enough in reserve to get that one-way ticket to Bkk plus about an extra couple of hundred dollars to stay in a Guest House for two weeks. Chill out; look for more substantial pay. With you legitimate credentials, you'll get snapped up by a reputable institute or even a university in Bkk quickly.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:13 pm    Post subject: starting Cambridge at KV Tuesday Reply with quote

i am gonna take the 13,200 at Cambridge/Knowledge village as this gets things going, and they offer a 4 day work week = 3 day vacation

they are offering a contract, visa, and teh school is commited to KV for 2-5 years, so there is some stability here

yeah, i have to pay for my own housing, so what

at least here i can do what i want with decent cash and actually be in the area-

ADU had all sorts of ruels about what you coudl and coud do in their hosunig and my frined just SMS'd me - 5 teachers just quit ADU in 4 weeks, and that doesn't include the 3 who left in Jan and the 2 who were fired

and the pair which got me fired are being moved out as well- all good news, maybe ADU can recover- not

the other rumor is ATTIC is doing an audit, and they are not happy about the lack of progresss the Tawteen program is making-

they (ATTIC, UAE Gov) pays everyone- they pay the teachers, the school, teh admins, they even pay the students!

after had the intersting job email for 20,000 a month, i realized how much cash is here-

especially since i know as a business person (when I was running my own shop/training center in Beijing for 3 years) the teacher gets about 1/3 of the actual cash from the contract

in beijing, we made about 400 per hour (RMB) and paid 150 rmb an hour, much better than others who paid 110 per hour-

by the third year, we had IBM, Nokia, Microsoft, Siemens, DaimlerChrysler, FOTON chinese cars and Achievo- starting a school is not easy, we were losing money for 2 years

similar numbers here i think

so, as an independent contract here with some good contacts, I could eaily be pulling 30-60,000 a month here

just takes awhile to get to know the correct hiring managers- this place will be rocking when Media City and other "subrubs" go online

lots of potential here

:^)

Just a note to anyone wanting to come and try to find a job.

This is current info.

There is a new visa available to literally anyone from any country.
It is called a JOB SEEKERS VISA.
Valid for 3 months.
You can look for work and even work on it !
You can renew it.

Cost, more than the FREE tourist visa. Not sure of how much.
This is a brand brand new visa and mostly benifits Indians and Pakistanis who are skilled and need to find a job.

Some schools put there teachers on this visa, and renew it every three months !!! Whatever. It's legal and that is important.

good luck to all !

Razz

Cambridge/Knowledge village is without peer. They are the great spire of the Emirates. Perhaps greater than Golding's great spire of Salisbury.

Congratulations on your success, Chuck D.

Possibilities:

NYIT
NYU (not sure if they're hiring, yet)
UAE Academy (Chamber of Commerce with U. Washington)
Zayed University
Petroleum Institute
HCT
Abu Dhabi University

I'm sure there's more possibilities than what you see above -- this is just the usual assortment of possibilities.
