Anyone teaching in Myanmar? I have got an offer in Mandalay, summer camp btw March-May. I know it's hot and I need certain shots, any advice on what to bring, what to expect? ( I am a female) What is the visa process like?
Any comment or advice is appreciated. Thanks! |

I am not in Burma/Myanmar, but have cruised around Mandalay; I suggest that you spend a few hours studying this forum:

There are a lot of very experienced Burma/Myanmar travellers who post there and who will be happy to share information with you. Be informed about the political situation. Be aware of what things you do that could get a local in serious trouble.
If I were returning for a teaching job I would bring a few plush Western-style bath towels, a good quality small-sized torch (electricity blackouts happen nightly-take your torch with you if going out in the evening), and a decent supply of those "Airborne" type of dissolving vitamin tabs. The batteries purchased there are not much good, so perhaps you could bring a stash of good batteries for your camera, etc.
ALSO - get some evacuation insurance since there are no world-class hospitals in the entire country. I'm not trying to scare you, but it is called "insurance" for a reason. If you need to get to Bangkok for a medical emergency it could cost you a fortune without the evac. policy.
Good luck - enjoy the beautiful country and lovely people! |

I forgot to suggest something else that I would be lost without if I lived in Burma/Myanmar: a shortwave radio! Your internet access will be severely limited by the military junta and the local TV/radio stations will not be terribly interesting to you once you hear the national anthem and the evening propaganda a few dozen times.
Buy yourself a nice shortwave radio! |

Mandalay is quite safe, and more than most places for females. Your school will write a letter for you that you can send to the Myanmar embassy to get your visa, or you can go to Bangkok for a few days to get it. |
