|
|
I am in Dubai now, job hunting after the disappointing experience at ADU in Abu Dhabi
I got lucky with a studio in Sharja @ 5200 AED for 3 months- very far, but i can rent a car for 80 AED a day
I was aware most places wated an MA here, but I didn't realize how bad thing were here
are there any decent groups/schools whihc will hire teachers without a MA? I have 10 years exp in 7 countries, I am not the plauge
I am about to take a HR job @ 12,000 AED a month for 2 years if I can't find a decent teaching job
any suggestions?
thanks |

Without an MA you are unlikely to do better than 12k/month. You could try Nordanglia though - they have been recruiting people for a foundation programme (pre-university entry) and there was no requirement for an MA. |

Are you looking for adult and tertiary-level work exclusively? I'm sure you could find work w/ an international/language school, but you being physically located in the UAE can be a disadvantage when it comes to them offering benefits. What about Oman? The Ministry of Higher Ed universities seem to be hiring non-MA Holders. University of Nizwa is hiring now, as far as I know. |

There's an ad on this site from HCT (9 Jan). They are looking for English teachers with :
a Master's Degree in TEFL or Bachelor's Degree and TEFL Diploma
I assume you are an English teacher and that you have a CELTA or other similar diploma. |

i just got off teh phone with a new school in Knowledge village0 they do IELTS prep and business english
anyway, we have a mutual friend and after a nice conversation I have an interview for a double shift: 9-2pm = 5 hours and 5-730pm = 2.5 hours
7.5 hours x 4 days a week = 30 hours per week x 4 weeks = 120 hours a month
@ 110 AED per hour = 13,200 a month for long 4 days a week
so, 2 things:
a) yes, there are jobs for non- MAs, but they are not at the main schools/Universites, they with new schools in Knowledge Village
b) its all about connections- if I didn't have a friend who knew the Operations Manager, I would never had gotten ths call
I'll keep ya posted, the only issue now is what about Visa and other issues
this is not 100%, so please feel free to ad your ideas
thanks |

Thank you for your email and your interest in the American University of Sharjah.
Unfortunately we have no vacancies at this point in time in the area of your expertise.
Also, it is a requirement of the UAE Ministry that all full time faculty be terminal degree holders in their discipline.
I wish you well in your career and employment endeavors.

You know, over the years HCT has run that ad suggesting that non-MA holders were accepted. Many years back I knew dip holders who were hired on expat contracts, though not those w/ just a BA. In recent years I have only come across 1 person who was hired w/o the MA.. All of that said, HCT might offer someone like Chuck an adjunct postion, no? Especially since they're seemingly in a pinch. |

It's a terrible offer. Since you are living in Sharjah and working in Knowledge Village expect to spend 4 hours a day getting to and from work. And what are you going to do between shifts? |

I assume and hope a teacher's command of English is better than we see exhibited here.
If not, I'm quickly losing confidence in the quality of education in the UAE. |
