Hello, I have just recently moved to the UAE and am in an International school that is not of the best standards. I have just completed my masters in Elementary Ed and have my undergrad in Biology. I have ESL experience from teaching in S. Korea. I also have teaching experience in the States. I am being paid 7000 Dhs a month. Now that I am here and hearing people talk I think that maybe I am in a bad position and I am feeling it too. Only a small portion of the staff are certified teachers. The turnover rate at my school is very high.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a possible career move for the 2008/2009 year? I like the UAE, but I want to be in a more professional setting. |

You could always move to Winnipeg, Canada and apply to one of the school divisions there - PM me for the name of my previous employer (for 25 years while my wife and I were raisnig our sone, etc..) and other potential employers who WILL treat you like a professional...
Man! You DO NOT realize how good you have it here in the UAE - safety, inexpensive food. Good schooling for your kids,...
Utopia?? No way. there are problems. However, IF I had known it was this good I would have "taken" my boys here in 1991 when I first got interested in this place. My wife would have come here too (eventually - once she realized this place is OK).
PM me for any details about getting work in a place where you will be treated like a professional. I only guarantee that your eyes will be opened.. |

Presumably you've signed a contract of empoyment. Read it very carefully. Schools tend to punish those that jump ship mid-contract. If you want to tranfer to a new employer in the UAE, it's best to part on good terms, that way you get a release letter and a reference. Good Luck |

Nage, simply based on a few details in your post, I think I can wager a good guess as to the name of the school you're in. They are very much unforgiving even towards those who complete the contract and leave. You can expect them to refuse you a letter of no objection you should try and seek employment in another school in the UAE. I would leave and take the 6 month ban that will automatically be placed on your passport. Perhaps look into something in neighbouring Oman to finish out the school year. Since I'm pretty sure I know who you work for, I would suggest you claim a family emergency. Get out, and then tell them that you won't be coming back. The other alternative? Just do a runner, and don't tell anyone your plans. People close to the runner are often questioned by the admin after they leave...best to slip away silently (hard to do when you live on campus, huh?)
If you want to be in the UAE for August, you'll need to leave this school immediately and take the 6 month ban. |
