It was so easy for us I already forgot about it...
they said put your fingers here and look here, I did it and BAM it was over. My husband though said the camera was aimed at his neck (he is tall)...oh well...hehe

For re-entry permit holders it makes going through immigration a breeze.

Not in my experience it doesn't.

i got to the airport at about 5.30pm on a saturday afternoon. in the foreign visitor's line, it was jam-packed with 100s of people. re-entry line, about 3 people all up. i waltzed up to the counter, they took my pic, i rolled my fingers across the machine, they stamped my passport and through i went. 60 seconds tops.

as i said earlier, i think the whole fingerprinting/picture thing is just show. but if it makes my wait post-trip that minimal, they can do it every time to me. i have nothing to hide. very simple and quick.

As I wrote earlier, delays are only part of the issue here.

Oh, and make sure you tell the police you have nothing to hide when the machines/databases make an error and identify you as a criminal.

Upon my trip to Hokkaido last month, I was so exhausted I don't even remember the process. I only remember a security guard in front of Nagoya's baggage terminal (after customs) kindly but firmly ask if he could put a drug-scented tissue in my sock for security dog training purposes. I guess I really was exhausted, as I complied without hesitation.

The dog found me, but when the dog's trainer went to retrieve the sock, we couldn't find the tissue. (I found it that night - in Sapporo - falling out of my pants leg. Glad I didn't encounter any dogs in the meantime.)

I digress. As for my thoughts on fingerprinting process, just because it's painless doesn't mean it's right.
