I can confirm that direct hires stopped a long time ago. Hired hands in the EFL teaching biz for ARAMCO are now provided by contractors like Howthy. The attitude to the hired hands is much the same - whether cleaners, drivers or English teachers. Hire and fire.

My advice for those thinking of KSA is this.

If you wish to maximise income, go military. If you wish to maximise leisure time, especially holidays, go academic.

Who are Howthy?

I think you might mean Al Hoty?

Yank,

Skip looking for an EFL job at Aramco; you should be looking at the elementary and junior high level there. If you have American or Canadian K-12 teaching certification, then you are eligible for one of the currently vacant positions in the Aramco school system. See the link below. If I had the proper qualifications, I'd go for it in a heartbeat.

Check it out and good luck.

It doesn't tell you much... nothing about pay or benefits.

YEs it would be a very good job if you are American and teach in the school on the Aramco compound.

I had a friend who taught there for 11 or 12 years his final payout more than 500k US dollars....very nice indeed...plus free health care for life

A lot of the jobs I've seen pay around 20k, I know a nurse in Qatar on 35-40k!

Why are wages relatively low for TEFL?

Were they higher?

Put it this way - in 1970-1972 working in KSA as a TEFL teacher I saved enough to buy an apartment in Central Edinburgh. Could not dream of that now.

Yes, but why do I suspect that this couldn't be replicated. I bet that lifetime health benefit is LONG gone... and now ends with your contract.

If I had stayed at HCT in the Emirates for that time period (leaving in around 2007), I would have walked away with more than that as my gratuity.

Rather off topic for the thread though...

I'm heading to Saudi to finance a third degree.

Thought it might come in handy.

Do you speak Arabic? You would likely need it to get a job in the Gulf. If you are a Westerner, this is likely a good profession for back home rather than overseas.
