Hello Everyone,

I have been reading everyone's posts over the years and it is interesting to have such a vast amount of information so easily accessible.

Now my question is has anyone renewed/extended their Visa after the 1 year period? I have a friend that worked in Japan for about 1 year and left Japan a while ago but now she plans to come back to get another teaching job here. Fortunately, she kept her old Gaijin card. When the immigration officer asked her to return it at the time she did not have it with her so she kept it. Now, she has a sponsor with a small school that wants to hire her. She left Japan in December of 2006. The Gaijin card still states her original sponsor and the card also states that it does not have to be renewed until the year 2010. The fact is she left Japan last December 2006 and her Visa expired in February of 2007.

Has anyone had experience with this?
Does this mean she can still use her old Gaijin card or will she be required to get a new one?

Seeing as she was supposed to surrender her card to immigration upon leaving the country, I'd say she should get a new one. I don't know why you used the word "fortunately" to describe her keeping it. It doesn't facilitate the visa process by any means. If anything it may hinder it as she broke the law.

As for your initial question, yes I have renewed my Visa after the 1 year period.

Because she let her visa lapse, she will have to apply for it again just like from scratch.

Who can say about the alien registration card, though? Bring it into city hall/ward office and see what they say. Of course, that's after she gets a job and new visa.

The gaijin card she is now holding is completely irrelevant as she will be starting the visa process over again. She will have to get a new card once she arrives back in Japan and has her new visa. It's probably better not to show that card to anyone as she was supposed to have surrendered it last time she left and all it can do is complicate things.

I renewed my working visa numerous times after the original one year period.

Thanks for your replies. So after the one year period is it more difficult to get an extension after one year? Is it more tedious? After lets say 3-6 months what happens? Please elaborate.

How about asking a coherent question?

My guess:
Is it more difficult to get an extension of a 1 year visa at the end of that year?

or

Can you get an extension of a visa (say 3 year) if you leave Japan after 1 year and come back again?

You clarify and we will elaborate.

(fwiw, I concur with the above request for a coherent question. Nevertheless...)

Since her visa has expired, she has to get an entirely new one. For example, I lived in Japan for 2 years. Then I returned to the USA for 2 years to do graduate school (at that time I turned in my Foreigner Registration Card to immigration upon leaving Japan). To come back to Japan, I went through the visa application process all over again (and got a new Foreigner Registration Card at the city of my new residence). The forms may have changed a bit, but for all intents and purposes it was virtually the same process as it was the first time.

One more thing, if she came over on the Working Holiday Visa the first time, she can't get that type of visa again. She has to get a regular working visa this time around (e.g. Specialist in Humanities/International Services or Instructor).

What one year period are you talking about?

The simple fact, as others have stated, is that her visa is expired. It doesn't matter if it expired in February, 2007 or yesterday. It is done. So, she will have to apply for a new visa all over again. This is not an extension or renewal. It is a totally new application as if she never had a visa before.

If a person has a visa that is not expired, they need to renew it before it expires if they want to stay longer.
