No, I use the US as the most frequent example because most of the readers here are yanks or are broadly familiar with US culture and experience. It comes in useful when making comparisons in a discussion to use terms and frames of reference that are familiar with as many people as possible. Rolling Eyes

A solution I find to have been effective is to bang the desk as hard as you can with your fist. They don't like it.

Confused

If I thought they needed to be awake in class (and there were times when I didn't) I would simply lightly rest a finger on the desk and gently start shaking it. They'd usually wake up and shout out "Earthquake!"

Whereupon everyone else in the class would laugh at them. Smile

Gentle embarassment from their friends was a much better method for getting them to stop sleeping, IME. YMMV.

I think it would be best to limit the club activites and juku and let them get home at a decent time and get to bed at a decent time...but that is just my opinion...
In preschool I let them sleep, they are like 5 years old and start going at 9:30 and dont finish until 5:30..they need the sleep...

G, I don't see how discussing the US is relevant most of the time.
This board is about Japan.

Anyway, I do agree Quibby about clubs and juku.
Some kids sleep at school but wake up for clubs and juku.
It is obvious what they think is more important for them.
I wish students with bad grades would not be allowed to be in clubs or at least would be on probation or get extra help with difficult subjects.

Yeah, sure, real strong position you've got going there, mate.
