Can anyone tell me about this place? It sounds like a big city, or kind of a large suburb of Bangkok.

I've been offered a job there: 36,000 a month plus free housing, or 41,000 a month with no housing. It sounded like a lot until I realized this place might have Bangkok prices. I'm not a big spender, but I like to go out on weekends. Will this salary afford me a comfortable lifestyle?

What is Nonthaburi like? Any fun? Expensive? Is it a very big city, as in a big night life and lots of entertainment and stuff like that? How does one get to Bangkok... by train? Is there access to the countryside, or am I pretty much in the city? Is it as hot and crazy and expensive as Bangkok?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Nonthaburi is a province, but you could think of it as a suburb of BKK (at least parts of it.) It has The Mall Ngam Wong Wan and Impact Arena (where all the major concerts are held.)

I think housing is generally cheaper than BKK. I would advise you to visit the area the school is located and the school itself before making any kind of decision.

There are many buses and vans that will take you into the city. If you are close to the river you could also take a boat during the day.

Your salary with or without the housing will allow you to live comfortably. Just don't get too carried away (easy to do in BKK) going out on the weekends and you'll be fine.

I've only been to Impact Arena in Nonthaburi by taxi, which is approximately 30 minutes from BKK, give or take, depending on the traffic. It seemed like a suburb to me.

Just curious to know how you came across this job.

I lived in Nonthaburi for 6 months in 2006. I didn�t see much going on there for entertainment. To get to downtown BKK, take the #63 (Victory Monument) bus to the Mo Chit Sky Train station. There you can get a fast train to downtown. You will find anything you could possibly desire for entertainment there.

I live in Thonburi which is another 'suburb' of BKK (i.e. a village). It's also about 30-60 minutes from downtown BKK and there is also not much here for entertainment.

There is always the occasional karaoke bar, even out in the village. But I'm really not into singing, or paying for a girl to chat with (or do anything else to) me so I stay away from those places.

I really reccommend you come visit BKK before moving here as well. I didn't and sometimes feel like I am in a little over my head.

Still haven't found a decent, friendly "normal" bar.
