The question has to be whether the opportunities (shall we say) afforded by this profession (or "profession") for exhibiting flakey behaviour in stunning and less stunning international locations attracts more nut-jobs to tefl; or whether the situations actually tip the nearly-sane over the edge in a way that wouldn't be so obvious on home territory where you can vent your weirdness in your local boozer or on your family.
A good bit of both obviously but I'm inclined to think there's more of the latter. There are also some who are more stable away than at home, of course.
I suppose this applies to other expat professions too - certainly some nutters there. |

Dear soapdodger,
He certainly does - in fact, I'm sure I had him as a colleague on more than one occasion.
The students loved him, but, of course, the administration was not quite as appreciative.
Regards,

| I worked for government for quite a number of years, and have been teaching abroad for about ten years now. IMHO government was far worse for having a higher percentage of nutters than TEFL, but I'm working in a government organisation again. Seems like the determining factor is that working for government gives employes a sense of job security, and thus a feeling of freedom to act out in anti-social ways. It had been liberating in TEFL to get away from the back-biting pettiness... until I came back to a government organisation... |
