Short-term -what I'd like to do is be in country for 1-3 months tops From March). Not planning to teach full time --but perhaps will try to see if I like it.
I spent 5 years in Asia teaching but don't hold that against me. I smoke but Canada has me well trained to always go outside.
So it could be win-win if you or anyone you know have something,
Cheetrs and feel free to PM |

Mexico is a big place. Did you have a particular area in mind? Mexico City, a beach area, something in the mountains? |

Compartodepa is really good for Guadalajara IF you are flexible in the area in which you want to live, because it's really difficult to narrow things down geographically. I think Craiglist for GDL has fewer than five ads for shared apartments. |

mmm...good point. If the OP would tell us the city, and feed us some listings, we could probably give advice on the colonia or area of town. |

I second Craig's list. The Mexico City one is really Mexico City and Beyond. |

Good point Leslie,
Where I live there are also loads of places to rent just a room. Often times with a private bath. The mostly cater to students or young unmarried professionals. Around here they are a lot cheaper. 1000 or less a month. |

Such places are common everywhere in Mexico I've looked, except on the beach. If you're searching in Spanish, a common term is casa de huespedes, at least in DF and GDL. It's not only restricted to students...a lot of Pemex workers that come into DF from other states Monday to Friday rent such places, then go home for the weekend.

Melee, you know how you and I disagree on cost-of-living between DF and smaller centers? Right here is where I primarily base my point of view. I find lots and lots of these places at the same price in DF as where you are. The major concern in DF of course is distance from things, which is always less an issue in smaller towns. I know of one person paying 12000 pesos for a swank furnished 2 bedroom joint, but then I know another person paying 400 a month much farther away. A good average here for being right in the city is 1000-1500.
Where's the OP by the way? |

OR less ment a lot less. I also know people (most of my students) renting rooms for about 300 a month--tiny rooms with a shared bath. Leslie said she paid 1500 with a shared bath--that struck me a really steep. You can get a very nice sized room with a private bath for about 1000 where I live (all utilities included) you can get a two bedroom apartment right near the center of town for 1500. No rent goes over 2500, not even for a 3 bedroom all new sort of place. We have 15 English teachers, no one is paying more than 2500--and that's me and it's my mortgage. No renter is paying more than 2000 most are paying less. Are MOST English teachers in Mexico city paying less than 2000 a month in rent?
Also how about food? Can most teachers in Mexico City afford to eat out all the time? Can you get a 3 course lunch for under 25 pesos? |

Teachers are paying all sorts of different levels of rent, but yes, most are in the 1000-2000 peso range, of the people I know. There are many others that are longer term, so renting unfurnished places with spouses or partners, at higher rents and mortages, and some paying less.
And yes, same thing on food, but again with the variety. Comida corrida places abound here too, ranging from 25-40 pesos. I frequent one just behind the school in a middle class residential neighbourhood mercado, and everything there is 30 pesos.
Like everywhere else, variety abounds I think. |

Another data point:
I taught in Huatulco, a small beach resort town on the coast of the Oaxaca. It wasn't very difficult to rent a room with shared bath and kitchen facilities within a five minute walk of the zocalo for maybe 1000 to 1400 pesos/month. I rented a decent 2-bedroom apartment with some minimal furnishings (beds, sofas, fridge, cookware, table & chairs) for 2300/month. I had some students who shared apartments or rented rooms in a large house for a measly 600 to 800 pesos/month.
Comida away from the zocalo tended to be about 35 pesos. |

I've been MIA for a week and it's nice to check in and see the friendly replies. A good starting point.
As to where- I must go to MEX but I guess I wouldn't need to live there--but within striking distance so I was thinking Acupolco or Oaxaca or some places the names escape me me now. Lets say a 6 hour bus ride from MEX.
Also it is CRUCIAL that my passport does not go missing. I won't go into details but that would be the end of the world. Are these average rental places safe from break-ins? I am so paro about my passport I'm even careful with safes in resorts.
Someone asked where I am and it's Alberta . As it happens there will be direct flights from YEG-MEX commencing in June.. This was announced yesterday so you guys are really up to scratch now-haha. Not really sure why but there you go.
So thanks for the replies---I still might just do a 2 week package with a sidetrip to MEX. |

Which airline will be operating direct flights from Edmonton to Mexico City? About your passport; the Embassy in Mexico City issues Canadian passports so if you were to lose it, they can issue you a new one there. I do understand that if you lose a Canadian passport one time too many, there is serious questions raised. |
