Hello forum frequenters-
I had a few newbie questions I figured I would get over with. I am 31, in my MBA program, and will have a CTESOL cert by summer. I graduate Jan 2009, and was thinking Turkey might be a good place to try teaching english/business english. However, I have a wife and kids, as well. Are the wages enought to pay for a family, or are we looking at starving? I can always wait a few years to let my kids get old enough to go to college, should I need to. I am a native speaker of english, US degree holder, etc.
Thanks,
Ryan |

All the married TEFLers I know in Turkey are married to Turks. I do not think you could support a family on the money you earn teaching - unless you are in some international school with US or UK benefits. |

It all depends on what you expect to earn.
If you're normal circumstances are supporting your family as a state/private teacher in the US or elsewhere, then I'd imagine it's not that much easier doing that there than doing the same in Turkey.
Seen as most welfare support, if any, has been eroded both there and here.
A lot of us do support families here. We obviously find it difficult, but I don't think it would be that much easier anywhere else. The only additional expenses are the fact that as non-Turkish citizens you'd have to pay for your family's residency, healthcare, etc.. unless the school would pay for those, which seems unlikely.
It is possible but it's difficult.
P.S (scot47) not all of us are married to "Turks", even though the state would have us believe we're married to "Turks". |

Mr Tortoise should remember the words of the Father of All Turks : "It is a great thing to be a Turk !" |

Not all of us are happy though,
and those that are happy, are not necessarily Turkish. |

You are not supposed to be happy. You are supposed to be 'in pursuit of happiness'. |

Its still possible to get a gig in a school with a furnished apartment and school meals .This cuts on your your three biggest outlays. Rent food and travel expenses. I know of least one school where these deals are still available. I also know they are recruiting and need native speakers, like desperately. This is Izmir of course , not Istanbul. |

A good deal in Izmir? Non-shared accommodation? Good salary? Where at? Are you talking language school, high school (kolej) or uni? And where are they advertising? Tell us more, please. |

I think I know one of the places - ITK = Ozel Turk Kolegi. I haven't seen them advertise but I gather they are desperate. They do accommodation, meals etc.
But who'd want to work there? Why are they desperate? I know lots of teachers who used to work there and left. None currently. |
