Hi there,
I thought I was applying to 'teflone' and have had a reply thanking me for my interest in SHANE.
I would be grateful for any information on SHANE, please.
Oh, I did try search, as I have on many occasions and all I get is blank pages. Anyone else have this problem?

Shane: Very up-front and proud (honest?) about how the British variety is the one to be spoken and taught. So, now, not only are North Americans prevented to get most jobs, due to linguistic protectionism, in the EU that pay more than a pittance, but the apartheid has spread to Japan. Way to go with the Kumbaya chorus...jerks!

No I haven't, as I've been away from home too long.
I don't think I'll go with them anyway as the info sent on terms and conditions has a few too many 'maybes' in it.
Also, as one who gets vomitous on anything that moves, there's no was I could public transport it for 1.5 hours - or more - to and fro work. |

I quite enjoyed my time with them - that was years ago now. At the time "British English" meant anybody other than Americans could work there. There were plenty of Australians, Kiwis and some South Africans and Canadians there. |

To the person who sent me the personal message, 'shonkie' means dishonest in a sneaky way, not up front about things. |

"Shonkie". That's a new one on me!
Sour Grape: I'm sure that you're quite correct in your reporting. I'm equally as sure that the wonderful recruiters and the deep-thinking policy-makers at the illustrious Shane schools, consider the nationalities you mentioned "the lesser of two evils".
It Never Ceases To Amaze Me that in western rhetoric, it is believed that all things evolve into better and more refined things...except for that insiduous subset of Brits (and believe me, as I work for some fabulous British people who DO NOT hold this view, so this is by no means a blanket sentiment!) that somehow feel that it is the Americans who have tainted the language. Everything else get better with time...wages...life expectancy...quality of life for many...but..the English language somehow gets a pass!
Christ! English is probably the most amalgamated language in known human history! It continues to evolve! It's not stagnant. That's why it is considered the global language...the language of business. It's not a former language of diplomacy (U.S. passports still have French translations of the request of permitting their citizens to travel unhindered...although it is gibberish to an increasing majority of U.S. passport holders). It isn't going the way of French in Canada where the Quebec governement actually has to place monetary fines on business owners who have signs erected where the French signage is NOT at least double the size of the English signage to protect their precious French!
Even, NOVA (may they rest in pieces) started out as a French-teaching entity until they quickly moved into pimping the English language.
Bottom line...Shane sucks. They're devisive in their employment policies and play into dangerous and sad stereotypes that encourage negative attitudes and false pride to be engendered.
Americans and the British are fabulous allies. I mean, what two nations do you know of have fought TWO wars and have got so far past it that Britain even contributed treasure and precious blood into a very unpopular war! Shane needs to get over themselves.
Both Japan and Britain are insular nations...but the majority of British are not. It seems that the Shane school chain is the insular one here!

P.s.= For those more learned, you may notice that I use grammar markers from both sides of the "Pond". My theory is that both varieties are correct...but then again, I don't feel threatened by the other variety. |

You may be right. When I worked there, I had the impression that they offered "British English" in an effort to distance themselves from larger companies like Nova (before all the recent scandals, of course) and so they could use the Union Flag as an eye-catching logo. But who knows?
Anyway, I have seen jobs advertised which prefer North Americans. Swings and roundabouts. I personally wouldn't write a company off purely on that basis, if my accent was acceptable to them. |

Shane (Lipscombe) himself is Australian, I believe. The British angle is largely a convenient gimmick. |

If you look at the new job listing today here one Dave's ESL, it shows:
"NEW: Teach in Japan or Taiwan
Shane English School / TEFLOne -- Saturday, 16 February 2008, at 7:17 a.m. "
It doesn't look like they are hiding the fact that Shane = TEFLOne.
