8,000 to 10,000 will be pretty comfortable, even if you're supporting two people on that. i live modestly on under 1,500, which includes everything other than annual visa and incidentals.
as far as making that, i suppose it's possible, but not likely the kind of pay you're going to find from your first job here unless you've got teaching credentials, and almost definitely not something you'll find over the internet. try some of the chain training companies--metro, web, new dynamic institute, etc.--the wages there are highest, but so are the hours. |

What can I realistically expect for a pay package in Chengdu and how can I locate a job online. The pay is so poor it really puts one into the red to go in and search a job out.
Chengdoo.com seems like a lot of people just tossing grey jobs up on the board.
www.eslteachersboard.com I agree, seems pretty dodgy.
Can I get 4250 for 15 hours plus a proper package in central Chengdu?
Thanks |

Since this thread was about my initial headache last year, I think I should contribute.
The job I got in Chengdu in the end was one that I had applied for before i even put this moany message up on the board. However, despite plans to build my contacts on the ground and sniff out the lie of the land, when it got to job hunting this december (I was on a short contract), I was in similar position to that which I had been in before - trawling the internet etc.
One thing that had improved though was my knowledge of the different colleges and universities situated in Chengdu, so I simply went back to my list and started cold e-mailing as many of them as I could to dazzle them with my credentials. Through doing this, and searching out a few new names on Buxiban(.com), I was able to bag a good job. I was also offered slightly less wonderful packages by some of the big name universities, but they would be adequate for the needs of some others I daresay.
Looking for ads online is a waste of time, start getting in touch, perhaps multiple times, and get in touch with recruiters too, as they come up with the odd juicy job as well (one of them offered a prestigious middle school gig for 8000 a month after I had signed for my first job).
Good luck guys

Chengdu is a great place with lots of great food and entertainment. Someone mentioned an Aussie in Chengdu. I use to work for a company called Ruide Developement which is also a recruting agency for teachers. The man who owns it is a Chinese born Australian. His name is Phillp Zhang.
He's a good guy in the sense of typical Chinese business man.
He does have foreign staff who assist him in familiarizing foreign teachers with their chosen schools. He also has sector personnel who take responsibility for teachers welfare and visit the teachers about once a month to see how things are going. At the time it was one of my first experiences of teaching in Chengdu and Leshan which incidently is a really great place. Average salary to the teacher is around 4000RMB per month which is quite a good salary if you live modestly. My wife and I were able to save 2000RMB per month and still have a comfortable time there. What the agent made was of no concern to me. It was about 2000RMB per month.
Metro is ok and the pay is quite good but you gotta be at the school for 40hrs per week which is a problem for many foreigners. Teaching time is 25 x 50 minute classes per week maximum which also include a lot of conversation classes such as social talk, conversation class and complementary classes. The standard classes all have pre arranged lesson plans that work in consert with the Ellis computer software.
All the students are adults or some highschool level students. No kids so no arrogant parents which is really great.
Anyway thats my 2 cents so I hope it helps |
