I received an offer from a director of a local business to give him private English lessons, as his previous teacher left the country. How much should I charge per hour?

If 'Yank' is indeed a yank, maybe it's him who's moving around inside the EU, being unable to get paperwork to settle down anywhere Rolling Eyes

Let's see if we can't get that OP question answered, eh!

I'll try a quick search, using the button to the top right (Yank, you see it?) Wink

okay, I found this.

You can supplement your income with private classes easily enough: there's loads of demand. Basically for academy work never accept less than 16 euros an hour for contract work, and twenty an hour for autonomo, and for privates you should be asking for at least 20 and hour for relatively central/several hours together, 25 an hour for further out.

and this.

PLEASE don't charge less than 20-25 Euros an hour (or 30 Euros an hour for Business English), ESPECIALLY if you are certified. Undercharging students for your hard work doesn't make them any more appreciative or likely to stick with English- on the contrary, it makes them value the lessons (and your time) less, and makes earning a living difficult for your fellow English teachers.

thanks, wildchild. thats what i was thinking, around 25-30.

and for the catty bunch above--i am near northern spain, close to southern france, and figured the rates would be similar in both places. i am american, and i do, in fact, have legal residence and working papers. it's pretty awesome, actually.

my first night here, i stumbled into a really upscale bar in the early evening, before the normal rush. there were two other men at the bar - a broker from a local bank, and a production director for a rather large company headquartered nearby. the latter, upon learning of my occupation, immediately gave me his mobile # and asked for private lessons whenever my schedule permitted. we spoke for a few hours, and i agreed.

since you were so curious.

Not being catty. I, too, have legal working papers in the Olde EU - and live near borders.

But we're a rare bunch. On this forum, it's far more common for newbies to need more basic info.

Sorry to have made assumptions in your case!
