I have heard many conflicing reports. I should be grateful if anyone could shed light on the following:
1. If one has a work permit and a B visa is it still necessary to exit the country every ninety days?
2. If one has a work permit, can one buy a motorbike and obtain a local license? Is it necessary to have a local license to buy a motorbike?

No, B visa gets extended to one year right after getting work permit, and is renewable annually at local Thai immigration office as long as you stay with the same employer. If you change employer after work permit is issued, you have to get a new B visa and start the work permit process over.

Someone else will have to provide more information on this. I have a Thai automobile driver's license. I couldn't get it until I had a B visa, I can't remember if you have to wait for the work permit to get a license. You may be able to buy a motorbike before you get the Thai license, I don't know. Check the forums on Thaivisa.com, also, I think the Thai Office (Department?) of Land Transport may have an English version of their website. You surely can buy a motorbike with the work permit and Thai motorbike license, and many, many people do. Getting the auto license was easy with my valid home country driver's license; the motorbike license will be easy, too, if your home country license specifically states it's valid for motorbikes, otherwise you will have to take a driving test (you can rent a motorbike for this purpose). |

With a work permit you can buy and own your own motorbike / motor car. You don't need a Thai driver's license to do that although it is strongly recommended you get one if you intend to drive here. Without one you are OK until you have an accident and then they will throw the book at you.
Some registration offices may require you get a letter from your embassy stating that you live here (it's a pretty dumb idea) in order to get your license. Some will accept your country's license. Some require you sit the test which in most cases can take up to a day (mine took 7 hours). Good luck. |
