Hello, I am wondering about getting a cell phone while teaching over there. Can anyone tell me how much they are (at least a ballpark idea) and if there are plans how much they are or is it better just to do a pay as you go deal.....

thanks

About $40 to buy a cheap mobile phone (in Thailand, usually called simply a "mobile"). The pre-paid card syastem (1-2-Call is the most popular) is inexpensive. There are monthly plans, and I'm told that can save money, but I never wanted the hassle of paying (and checking!) the bill.

Don't forget to buy a SIM card there (AIS 1-2-Call, as I mentioned) when you get the phone, less than $10. Recharge cards available at 7-11's and many, many other places. Also, if your phone is lost or stolen, report it to AIS promptly, in case the thief has something nefarious in mind for your SIM card (they can be used to detonate bombs, apparently). Cheers!

AIS also has some very good and very inexpensive Internet packages for your mobile phone. I've been very happy with the quality of service and can't remember a time when it has failed to work for me wherever I have been in Thailand.
